Destcember 6th 2018-Prompt #3-“Living Without the Light”
It had been a day since the Traveler was stolen from them. Sapph meekly struggled to float next to Cassus, who he himself felt like he was barely clinging to life.
“That was one hell of a fall...” he said, limping through the snow.
“Cass, I can’t...fly...anymore...” Sapphire said, dipping lower.
“Hold on, little light, I got you.” He said, lightly picking her out of the air. “I’m gonna find us a place to rest for the night.”
As if in answer, Cabal troops growled in the distance. Based on the foot falls and the time between sound and echo, they were coming right towards him.
“Damn it...hold on, Sapph...” Cass whispered.
As if he was the shadow of death itself, Cass slipped into the shadows, placing his worn out ghost into his pack. His left joint was bent out of shape, but he was a Hunter. That had never stopped him before.
He counted 20. All armed to the teeth with shotguns, slug rifles, and their own muscle. Without a even a word between them uttered, every single Cabal fell to his knife without a sound before anyof them even had time to react. 20 dead in 12 seconds. Not his best but he was crippled at the moment. Now for food.
About an hour later, Cass had a fire going in a cave nearby. He had killed a few rabbits for food. Exos were still technically human and food helped us maintain a connection to our humanity. Sapphire sat in his lap, still awake but not by much.
“Cass, I don’t know how much longer...I can...” Sapph started.
“Stay with me...I had a dream while I was out. A place where we could possibly go. We could get our light back.” Cass said.
Cass stares at the wall grimly. “That, I don’t know.”
A week later, through storms and mountains, still Cassus walked, Sapph in his backpack. “Stay awake...stay awake...stay awake...” He kept telling himself.
As time wore on, his legs gave out. He could not keep doing this. Finally, after he put everything he had into walking, his body gave up in a forest and he blacked out.
After what seemed like a lifetime, his mind awake feel a bird’s claws on his back and to hear one salty, unimpressed line.
“Oh dear god, is that a guardian?”
