I love the creativity of those silly scientists - Quantum foam [termed by John A. Wheeler some decades ago] was just the beginning! Now come all sorts of nuclear pasta - nuclear gnocchi, spaghetti, waffles, lasagna... etc... Who said physics is not [f/y]ummy? [funny and/or yummy]

anyone wanna hear some physics shit about the time dilation in ‘murders in space’?

we know a lot of time dilation happened in the play. time dilation basically occurs when an object is travelling really really fast; a long period of time experienced by someone on earth might be perceived as a much shorter period of time by someone travelling in a spacecraft!

calculating exactly how much faster time passed for james and johnson compared to back on earth allows us to calculate how fast the ship was travelling to produce that effect!

so, according to the laws of physics, for the amount of time dilation mentioned in the play to occur, james and johnson had to have been travelling 1698 times the speed of our current fastest spacecraft!

i’ve been taught to always show my working™️ so you can see it below (ive made a couple of approximations)

of course, this only takes into account time dilation, and not time dilution, so… take it all with a pinch of salt :D

I love that feeling when STEM geeks chat about absolutely anything. We use random math or science lingo for absolutely anything.

On finding a career that fits really well when the one you're in isn't quite right: "you just need to start some small perturbations" "yeah perturb yourself"

Something something mean median mode

Pretty niche: "Rather than be a 'T-shaped' person with depth in one area of expertise and breadth across some other areas, I was thinking why not be a person shaped like the gravitational potential of our solar system: big depth in one central area, with a 3d "T-bar" that goes out and has numerous additional divots of depth."

The classic: comparing something to superposition or wave-particle duality (have you guessed I'm a physics gal yet?)

"It's kind of like, I have the code for the task but my internal compiler just isn't running for some reason"

Please add more if you have any fun examples of using STEM lingo out of context or to communicate something only tangentially related! (I live for this stuff)

finally watched Thor 2

Too sleep-deprived to make any sort of intelligent comment - but jeez, I'm getting so many Legend of Korra vibes, with all the "(HARMOOONIC) CONVEEEERGENCE!!!111!!". (Which apparently results in cartoon physics? Huh. That's interesting.)

I also got some Fringe vibes - Dr. Selvig is so Walter-like in this movie, really, and it all does read a bit like a Fringe event. But that just makes me a bit sad. Still missing Fringe.
