I know that this is ooold but... Harry potter bs au? In which house would you put every character? :)))
Ooooh yes! What a good question! It never gets old for me, tbh. My first big fandom and my newest one colliding. I haven’t thought about this in a while though, so it’ll be fun to figure out again.
So, to me the obvious Slytherins: my boy John Silver. Max. Eleanor. Rogers. Cunning, resourceful, ambitious, often self-serving, but willing to do absolutely whatever it takes to protect the people they love, even if it means doing messed up shit. I feel like we see that thing in Black Sails that JKR occasionally bothered to include in HP, where Slytherins aren’t all just the same shade of Evil™ and actually when it comes to looking after their own family/friends they’ll do incredibly brave or difficult things to protect them (a la Draco’s mother lying straight to Voldemort’s face about Harry being dead). Sometimes in following their ambitions our Slytherins lose sight of protecting what’s important, but once they realise that they’ll move heaven and earth to fix that, even if it costs them everything. But then sometimes they really are just the worst...Rogers.
Hufflepuffs: Mr Gates. Mr Featherstone. Mr Scott. Billy (pre-S4 mental breakdown). I feel like Hufflepuffs make for good quartermasters, valuing hard work, loyalty, and fair play. Plus, Mr Featherstone looks a bit like a badger, so that makes me happy. I suppose even after his Beard of Betrayal story line, Billy’s still Hufflepuff-ish? He valued loyalty and fair play so much that it completely broke him when the crew turned on him. And if there can be Gryffindors who go bad, like Peter Pettigrew, there can surely be Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws who spectacularly fuck up their life choices too. Billy’s one of them.
Ravenclaws: Miranda. Thomas. Thomas in particular seems a fairly obvious one. He has Hufflepuff traits too, clearly, but his passion for learning and debating and his love of wit (”Thank you, dear. Well played.”) scream Ravenclaw to me. Miranda I think has more additional Slytherin traits. She can definitely be cunning and resourceful, and that streak of ice cold vengefulness in her seems more Slytherin than anything else. Overall though, I think Ravenclaw. At least, Ravenclaw when not pushed to extremes.
Gryffindors: Flint. Madi. Anne. Vane. Teach. Like with the Slytherins, I feel like you have many different shades of Gryffindor in Black Sails, but they do tend to share a common regard for bravery, daring, and adhering to their own personal codes of conduct. Vane and Madi in particular strike me as two classic Gryffindor types. I mean, Madi is basically Hermione. Bookish? Check. Brave? Check. A crusader for social justice from a young age? Check. Both Anne and Flint could be argued to be Slytherin-ish, I think, but Anne in particular I’m not sure it fits that well (I love her, but she’s more often the deadly instrument for Jack’s cunning plans, and she seems to have zero ambition of any kind). Flint has traits all over the place, and I think perhaps I’d call McGraw a Slytherin, but overall I think Gryffindor fits him best.
People I can’t decide on: Jack bloody Rackham. He fits so squarely between Slytherin and Ravenclaw that I really don’t know where I’d put him. He fits both houses to a t. Is he a cunning and self-serving Ravenclaw? Or a witty, knowledge-hungry Slytherin? I honestly don’t know. Perhaps he’s like Miranda; perhaps he’s the Ravenclaw pushed to extremes. Also the Maroon Queen. I have no idea where to put her. Perhaps another Slytherin?
Honorary mentions: Idelle - Slytherin. Mrs Mapleton - SLYTHERIN. Charlotte - Hufflepuff. Muldoon - he’s the tiniest little Hufflepuff. Mr De Groot - Hufflepuff. Joji - Gryffindor.
