GUYS, I NEED YOU TO LISTEN TO ME CAREFULLY!!!
Peter Pettigrew x Regulus Black
James Potter and Peter Pettigrew were childhood friends, best friends and family. Just months before starting Hogwarts, James promised Peter that he would always stay his best friend. And Peter, with all his heart, believed him.
But then, on the train ride to Hogwarts for their first year, they met Sirius Black. And that's when Peter's friendship with James went downhills. James would tell Peter that he's still his best friend, but his actions spoke louder. James and Sirius were always together despite them being a group. So Peter and Remus became a little closer.
In their second year, Sirius's younger brother, Regulus Black, joined Hogwarts and was sorted into Slytherin. Sirius warned them not to interact with him. Around the same time, they found out about Remus's werewolf problem so Remus started getting more attention from James and Sirius. It was then that the Marauders unofficially fractured: there was a trio, and a duo. And Peter was a member of neither.
In their third year James started calling Sirius his best best friend, already forgetting his promise to Peter.
By their fifth year, Peter felt so lonely it hurt. Despite all four of them always being together, he felt like he didn't belong.
One day, he found Regulus Black in the library studying. He didn't know why but he sat by the same desk. Regulus ignored him, but Peter kept sitting there staring at nothing. Eventually, Regulus said something caustic to him. Peter replied with unexpected sarcasm, only to immediately panic after realising what he said. (Peter suffers from social anxiety). But something about that moment intrigued Regulus. It happened few more times that they accidentally stumbled upon eachother. And they kind of started hanging out (mostly studying in library) when no one (especially Sirius and James) was around.
In sixth (Regulus's fifth) year, they started going out. They would meet eachother past curfew and sneak out. Surprisingly, Sirius, James and Remus still didn't find out. Neither did anyone else.
Unknowingly, Regulus saved Peter from despair and and loneliness.
By the end of the seventh (Regulus's sixth) year, Regulus joined the Death Eaters. He broke up with Peter, not because he stopped loving him, but because he couldn’t give up the dream he'd held since childhood. Becoming a Death Eater was something he’d prepared for his entire life. He simply couldn’t let go of it, not even for Peter.
[Summer 1978-September 1978]
Regulus joined Death Eaters and didn't return to Hogwarts for his last year while Peter and the Marauders, already graduated, and joined Order of the Phoenix.
Peter had thought a lot about it. He loved Regulus way too much. How couldn't he? Regulus saved him when he was on the edge, and having no other healthy friendships and relationships, he grabbed onto, clung to this love with everything he had. So he made a decision. He joined Death Eaters, not caring about his moral values anymore. Only Regulus was important. This way they could still be close. Regulus was more important than staying loyal to his friends and Order.
Voldemort accepted him only because he could be a double spy and give away information regarding Order.
Peter thought that Regulus would be happy to see him pursuing same path that Regulus oh so loved and wanted since forever. But that wasn't the case. Because Regulus already realised that Death Eaters and Voldemort weren't the kind of people he thought they were and wanted to be, he knew the truth. And he already made up his mind of betraying them, which meant death.
They had switched places.
Peter joined the side Regulus was about to betray and Regulus joined the side Peter was about to betray.
It hurt him. Knowing that now Peter would have to stay on this side without a way to escape without dying.
Regulus couldn't bring himself to say anything to Peter. But they sat in silence, one last night. He didn't tell Peter that this was the last night, last time they're seeing eachother. And Peter was happy that Regulus finally came around, that things will finally go back to how they were before.
Before leaving, Regulus left him a note:
"You followed me into the darkness, but I couldn't bring us to the light. I'm sorry."
And he left to find horcruxes.
Regulus Black found a horcrux. Salazar Slytherin's locket. He knew he wouldn't return alive. Before he died he wrote a letter:
"To the Dark Lord. I know I will be dead long before you read this but I want you to know that it was I who discovered your secret. I have stolen the real horcrux and intend to destroy it as soon as I can. I face death in hope that when you meet your match, you will be mortal once more. R.A.B".
He put the fake locket and gave the real one to Kreacher. By the time Kreacher escaped the cave, Regulus already drowned after inferi dragged him beneath the surface of the dark ocean.
It would've been his birthday. Regulus never lived to see his 18th birthday.
Years later, in 1996, Sirius Black would die on the same day by falling through the Veil while fighting his cousin Bellatrix.
Regulus was officially declared dead. Peter became numb and listened to Voldemort's orders like a machine.
Peter killed McKinnon family on Voldemort's orders and did many unspeakable things. Eventually, he became Potters' Secret Keeper. Because Sirius was far too obvious choice given Sirius was James's best friend. Who would suspect that Peter, of all people, would be their Secret Keeper, anyway? Something in Peter snapped that day.
Peter betrayed Potters. He led Voldemort straight to them.
Ans when Lily's love saved Harry and defeated Voldemort, Peter was there. When he heard Sirius's voice, it was like he was snapped out of trance. For the first time in what felt lime forever, suddenly he wanted to live. A desperate, panicked need to survive surged through him. His quick thinking saved him. He framed Sirius for betrayal and murder, faked his death and vanished into hiding as a rat.
