A/N: ITS THE FIRST OF THE MONTHH!!💕 Im not even gonna try to make up an excuse I know this sucks. I’ve been really busy trying to get back on my relationship with God and thank God I have. Once again I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting I’ve been doing a lot lately and things like that… but Thank you to all the people who prayed for me!! Thinking about the cultural shock you get around showering habits when moving to the UK for your dream job. Well, not right after moving, if not when you start living with your boyfriend, Simon. It’s not like you hadn’t spent the night at his place before, but he’d showered whenever you stayed over. Maybe it was the self-consciousness of a brand new relationship, or maybe it was a coincidence. But a week into living with him fully, with him off duty, you’d noticed he’d skipped one or two showers in a row. That did not sit well. Not when you showered every single day, at LEAST once a day. You were aware he was a soldier used to going days on end without a proper shower, sleeping wherever was safest, regardless of cleanliness. And not that he didn’t like being clean, you knew he’d dive right into the bathroom after strenuous work outside or a workout. But this was something you had only heard of and never believed occurred. When the weather was really cold, some people didn’t shower because they saw no need for it in such low temperatures. 

It was really cold outside, mid winter, and he’d decided to lounge about the house now that he was home after such a long time, plus getting to officially have his girl under his roof. He was slipping into some loose sweatpants for bed when you were heading to the bathroom to shower. 

“What are you doing?” You asked him, wide eyed.

“Um… Heading to bed.”

“Without showering?”

“It’s cold, lovie. I don’t need t’ shower. I haven’t even sweat.”

You made a noise of disapproval and marched towards him. Took his hand tightly and began to drag him towards the bathroom while saying: “The importance of hygiene does not stop even on a cold day. You could give me a UTI if we do the do.”

“Just say fuck, sweetheart.”

“Well, I won’t let you fuck me if you don’t shower.”

“Didn’t know y’were in the mood.” He teased.

You stopped in front of the shower and glowered at him. “You won’t sleep next to me if you don’t wash your ass. It’s important. I shower every day.”

“But I don’t. And certainly not half of England, especially this time of year.”

You cringed and stuck your tongue out in disgust. “Yuck! Absolutely not. Not with me. You will shower.”

“But–”

“No buts!” You pinched his lips when he pouted, the scar on his mouth scrunching. “Let’s make a deal. Whenever you feel lazy or you don’t feel like showering because it’s cold, we can shower together. It will make showering fun.”

Simon’s lips stretched into a smirk, a mischievous glint sparking in his brown eyes. “Fun?”

“Not that kind of fun! Well… maybe… It’s on the table! My point is… If we shower together, it’ll be different. Something to look forward to. Motivation to do something you’re not particularly excited about when it’s cold or you feel tired.”

Simon’s smirk turned soft, and with a nod he agreed. 

What you didn’t predict was that a year later, when you were going through a difficult time mentally and emotionally, your words would matter. Because when you’d spent days, cooped up in your shared room, paralyzed by an all-consuming dark gloom, the last thing you’d expected was to see your boyfriend arrive so early from deployment. Your best friend had told him everything that was going on with you. She was concerned, and, although you asked her to not worry Simon with your issues, she refused to watch you drown in the suffocating grief and stress. So he arrived and sat by you, patiently, caressing your greasy hair from days of not showering, ignoring the unpleasant smell of stale air, dirty sheets, and sweaty skin. He’d smelled a lot worse things anyway. He thumbed the tears on your cheeks, and waited until you opened up. He held you through it until all of it was out in the open. 

“Let’s go shower, lovie.” Simon spoke softly and you shook your head. You felt so incredibly exhausted. No matter how long you’d slept, or the time you’d spent unmoving, you felt like a heavy boulder, balancing at the edge of a precipice ready to tip over and sink into nothingness. “Too bad, because the importance of hygiene does not stop when you feel sad.” 

You wanted to be angry at him, but you knew he wasn’t trying to be insensitive. Simon knew first hand what it was like to grieve. What depression did to the human condition. And in his brown eyes you saw his determination to lift you up from that hole you had sunken to in his absence. Simon refused to let you fight this alone. Refused to let you shoulder a war on your own, because he knew what it felt like to claw his way out of the pit on his own. So you took his hand and let him help you out of bed. Let him undress you and pull you under the warm water raining down from the showerhead. Leaned into Simon’s safe embrace, skin to skin, bodies molded together like a perfect puzzle. You shuddered at every caress of his callused fingers as he lathered your ashen skin with soap, hummed in delight as he scratched your scalp with careful precision, foam and bubbles crowning your wet hair. Then he washed away the suds, and with devoted adoration let his fingers trace over a few rivulets that ran down your skin, reminding you of his absolute love, desire, and worship. Devotion that melted away the loneliness devouring your soul, even if for just a moment. Even if tomorrow you ached again.

Simon kissed your forehead before helping you out and dressing you back up in one of his large shirts. Your favorite one. Sat you down, and handed you a tooth brush while he went up behind you to untangle and moisturize your hair. After that, Simon went into the bedroom and cleaned out the bed, creating a nest where warmth and safety would encompass you after laying with cold, cruel agony for so long. He laid you down, brought you food and made you eat. You hadn’t even realized how much you craved his cooking, even if it was a basic, toasty grilled cheese—extra cheesy—accompanied by a cup of fresh tea. He covered you up when you were done, your stomach full after running on empty and aleatory meals. Came back and laid beside you in the little haven he had built for you out of pillows and blankets. Kissed your eyelids and cradled you into his chest, even after you had long fallen asleep.

Did I think of this while showering? Yes… 

I am hispanic, showering every day is the standard, at least where I'm from. I was shocked when I learned that a portion of Americans and (depending on the region) Europeans shower every other day. Especially when it’s cold. Correct me if I’m wrong (gently). That’s what I’ve been told. I also tried to corroborate by searching it. But either way, I can be wrong. Anyway, for the purpose of this hurt/comfort fic, this is what came to mind.

"No. I'm not going outside just to jump in some pointless leaves." Simon replies his back towards you.

"Pleaseee Siii!! Just for 5 minutes!" you say following Simon around the house.

You've been asking Simon all week for him to play in the leaves with you.

Although, you get leaves every year you never see Simon really enjoy any season.

But Autumn how it was your favorite.

The leaves falling. Raking leaves to jump in.

It reminds you of home.

How you used to play with your cousins.

After your millionth time of asking he reluctantly agreed.

"Fine. Fine. Let's just get this over with so I can go back inside and finish cleaning my gear."

He then mumbles under his breath,

"𝙸 𝚠𝚒𝚕𝚕 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚞𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚙𝚢 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚗 𝚒𝚏 𝚒𝚝 𝚋𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝚊𝚐𝚘𝚗𝚢."

That’s how Simon ended liking one season out of all.

However, he couldn’t tell anyone that.

Not even you.
