PSA: on censorship and publishing

In general a lot of the dialogue when harmful books get published ends up being around freedom of speech and censorship. ("They deserve to be published because this is America," etc.) 

MOST WRITERS DON’T GET HIGH-PROFILE PUBLISHING DEALS. And while editors do choose stories based on what they think will be profitable, the publishing industry has a lot of say in what ultimately gets presented to the public.

At the bare minimum publishers have the ability to decide not to give writers a platform to perpetuate harmful and unrealistic narratives about intimate partner abuse, and when they choose to do so anyway, they have the responsibility not to use existing fan communities to market those stories to young girls. The people in these communities (overwhelmingly young women) already see the abuser’s character as a positive force in their lives and are particularly likely to dismiss or romanticize that abuse.

Anyway I'm really disgusted with all of the parties involved, from simonbooks to One Direction's team to wattpad.
