We made a quick stop on our way north in the Vipava Valley, otherwise known as foodie and wine-o heaven. To take full advantage, we stayed on an agriturismo in Tomaj run by the Skerlj family and enjoyed dinner and breakfast from the fruits of the land. We had to find an ATM the next morning and decided to take that as an opportunity for a nice walk to the next town. The walk took us by apple and plum trees in abundance, and even more vines just waiting for harvest time in a couple of months. There wasn't much in "town," but we did find a really nice guy and the tourist info office (which I'm surprised they even had!) who called over to a local vineyard and arranged for us to visit. Turns out Boris Lisjak's family has been making wine for generations, and they've amassed quite a lot of awards for it, too. Lucky us! It was fun to see his cellar and of course to taste three of his varietals. We took a bottle of the Teran - Istria's most common and well known red - with us to enjoy later.
SKERLJ With just under 3 hectares and a production of 4000 bottles per vintage, Skerlj is probabily the smallest wine producer that bottles wine in Carso. Matej has taken over the family business and makes wines with a different philosophy..the aim is to focus on quality. He believes in making as little interventions as possible in the vineyard as well as in the cellar. Indigenous yeasts and uncontrolled fermentation. Matej explained how the strenght of winemaking in Carso is the terroir - the windy and dry climate prevents pests and deseases and the rock in the terrain is perfect for maintaining humidity. He macerates his whites for about two weeks - also his granfather macerated but just for four days. He started bottling in 2004 and ever since has been obtaining great results. He learnt how to make wine from his family but also from experience and by talking to other producers of the area, he defines Zidarich as a friend and a great mentor. He makes only single blends the 'austrohungarian' way: vitovska, malvasia and terrano. So great to meet a small young producer working in the right direction and making delicius wines. A perfect example of traditional methods combined with innovation and quality.
