something about reducing Skye's final moments, her saying "you won't" to Viktor saying he'd miss talking with her, to jokes about her knowing Viktor was gay just doesn't sit right with me. in this act, Viktor is essentially killing her for the second time. whether you believe that it was actually her or a merely a representation of his humanity, it was, in its own way, very violent. Viktor had known her for years, since they were children, then worked with her (although not closely) at the academy, and then spent months with her in his head at the commune. he was led into the Undercity by her, fostered that community with her, and helped heal Vander's mind at her side. Skye Young in many ways represented the good that Viktor sought to do, him getting rid of her like that is a tragedy. treat it like it is!
I like the part in the arcane finale when viktor and jayce came back and said "haha just a prank guys" and Warwick/Vander turned back to normal and said "woah sorry guys" and isha popped out of the shadows and signs "we saved the city guys!" And Ambessa gets up and says "I see that I was wrong. I'm sorry." And she and mel hug and get ice cream and Maddie gets up and apologizes to caitlyn for trying to kill her and they make up and vi and jinx hug it out cause sisters fight sometimes and ekko comes in and everybody cheers for their hero and jayce viktor and mel get married and have a big dance party at the wedding and and jinx is like "I feel a song coming on!" And can't stop the feeling starts playing and everyone starts dancing and Skye walks in with Silco and Sevika following behind and she says "forgetting someone?" And everyone starts dancing and silco and sevika are in the corner tapping their feet to the beat and Vi, Vander, and Jinx drag them to the dance floor and they break into a choreographed duo dance and also jinx and ekko sign the adoption papers for Isha and vi and caitlyn are dancing together and smiling and hugging and kissing and vi says "heh, what are we? Some kind of league of legends?" And jinx says "wait, say that again..."
This is what hurts me so much about the scene “I’ll miss our talks,” with Skye responding, “no, you won’t.”
Viktor really, truly from the bottom of his heart, wishes he cared about Skye more. But he never was interested in interacting with her from the start, she was just an assistant to him while he was wishing it was Jayce next to him instead.
And then she got warped into the Hexcore, and later Viktor did too and suddenly Skye, his assistant he feels intense guilt for having killed, is right there, sharing the astral plane with him.
And he does what he feels like he should do: to befriend her, to force himself to put all this energy into a friendship for her, because the only thing that could make this better would be if there was a positive outtake- of “at least they became friends”- to try and gain any semblance of light out of a horrible situation.
But that’s not how that works— you cannot force a friendship to happen. They occur naturally. Viktor tried so, so hard. And it never would be enough, because it’s not about effort.
He was unable to cope with the fact that sometimes bad things happen that shouldn’t have and there’s no takeaway or lesson. He was unable to recognize that his guilt for what happened didn’t mean that he cared about her for who she was as a person, but rather he cared for her in the sense of he knew she was a living human being who shouldn’t have died.
It was guilt. It’s always been guilt that’s tied them together from his perspective. And he says, “I’ll miss our talks,” to try and make her feel like he values her because he so badly wants to, but Skye can cut through it.
“No. You won’t.”
The Beautiful Animation Touches of Arcane, act 2
It's not exactly a hot take to say that Arcane is one of the most striking and visually compelling animated series of the last few years, the animators and directors at studio Fortiche threw everything but the kitchen sink at this show, creating something intensely dense, layered and absolutely soaking in little animation touches, clever bits of cinematography and just straight up good direction and filmmaking.
It is impossible to discuss everything compelling about Arcane and its animation in one video, but I'm at least going to do my level best to talk about some of my favourite scenes from the second act (episode 3-6), and oh god oh god oh f*** my video about the animation is longer than all three episodes it discusses combined.
In this video we'll focus particularly on Jinx's custom animation rig that lets her swap between the Jinx and Powder personalities, how Silco visually asserts power over Marcus when they argue, how Viktor's entire character arc is contained within a single scene from his childhood, how Vi and Caitlyn speedrun an enemies-to-lovers trope via body language, and the seduction of Jayce Talis and his unfaithfulness to Viktor.
You have no idea how many Netflix copyright blocks I had to edit my way around to get this online.
