So, did brendanicus miss the part where UKRAINE IS A MAJORITY-SLAVIC COUNTRY!? I don't think going off to help a majority-Slavic country defend itself from genocidal aggression is something a reporter from the "cleanse the earth of the slavic hordes" would do. Important thing about coding (as in "writing characters in a way that reflects certain groups that exist in real life") is that it can be good or bad depending on whether the character is coded in a way that resonates with the people they're meant to mirror, or in a way that reflects the stereotypes used against those people

Like, if there was a character who had a Slavic name, was frequently shown eating foods like pierogi, dressed in similar clothing to Slavic traditional costumes, was associated with storks, wolves, and autumn, and had a lot of traditions that seem much older than whatever religion they're currently attached to, I would call that character slav-coded and I would be happy about it

If there was a character who was depicted as either a violent, frequently drunk, criminal (if he's a man), or an obedient and sexually available waif (if she's a woman), who in both cases is a foreigner and speaks in broken English, and whose name doesn't sound like a name any Slav has ever had but is clearly meant to seem Slavic to westerners, I would call that character slav-coded and I would be furious about it

I used an example specific to a group I'm a part of but there are lots of others so I welcome additions to further illustrate the point
