8: Kiss in the Rain
The storm had advanced more quickly than expected, descending almost entirely without warning, and they had no chance but to wait beneath the willow tree, or race the rain to the door. Ruby was in no mood to run, and so, with a mutter of, “My poor hair won’t survive a second of this, she lead on. They walked briskly, but it was a significant walk from the edge of Luken’s lands to even the gamekeeper’s cottage, and it Ruby no shortage of time to ruminate, both on the sorry state of herself, and on the man at her side.
Her hands itched for pen and paper -- ink so much easier to use than words -- but they were so far from the safety of the library, with letters slid back and forth over the course of hours or days or weeks. She glanced up at Abel more than once, desperately trying to guess his thoughts. What did he think of her, disheveled as she was? No doubt her rouge was beginning to run, and her veil clung to her face already.
Abel was no better himself, though he seemed less put out about it. It wasn’t hard to be less vain than herself, after all, but there was no denying the certain charm in the way his hair became displaced, a few locks plastered to his forehead, droplets adorning his eyelashes like jewels.
He did have such lovely eyes.
The rain droned on. It was almost surprising, the way her heart jumped to her throat as she began to move her hand. A chaste gesture, especially compared to what she’d done the night before, and yet it sent her fluttering like a little girl. Still, she moved her gloved hand slowly == slowly towards his.
I’m so frightfully fond of you, she wanted to say, but instead hooked their little fingers together. You deserve so much better than a place like this, she thought, and brushed her thumb against his palm.
Ruby was a selfish woman at heart, and didn’t want to let him go.
She caught his hand fully, fingers almost trembling, and stopped walking. For a moment, she stood still, rain on her face, on his. A hundred witty lines pushed against her lips, wanting to spill out and slip the mask of that clever, smiling woman back over her face. It would hide the way she blinked too quickly, the way her pale face tinged pink. It would hide the fear -- it would keep her from being seen.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I know you prefer letters. You don’t have to speak, if it’s too hard.”
She almost didn’t hear his answer. Almost didn’t want to.
Abel barely moved as she stepped closer. If she didn’t know better, she might have thought he feared her. It wouldn’t be the first time someone froze under the gaze of a woman like her, however indirect. But she looked at him head on, gaze unwavering though her heart continued to race. She could count the raindrops sitting on his hair. Couldn’t help but wonder if he thought about her own.
Couldn’t help but wonder if he had figured out yet just how much that meant. Ruby was vain as any Orlesian woman, never a hair out of place and always under control. And here she was, letting the rain ruin her further, just so she might spend another moment looking at him.
It almost aches, you know. I don’t know what to do with all of this.
She kept the words silent in her mouth, unsmiling as she turned to face him fully, her free hand lifting to barely graze the shape of his jaw.
All of her thoughts were poured into the kiss, all the racing and rushing words that never went away, willing him to taste everything she wanted to say but didn’t know how -- and so afraid all the same. There was no great passion in the kiss, no sweeping romance, no swelling score. A featherlight touch, a hesitant brushing of the lips, asking permission to be heard. Giving permission to hear.
It didn’t last long enough, but she could never silence her mind. You’ve been here too long, what’s he thinking, you’ve done enough for the day. Ruby let herself pull away, to let the mask of propriety settle back over her as she pulled away, hands clasped, eyes firmly on the path ahead of them. That everpresent smile threatened to return, more natural than breathing by now, but she fought it back. A part of the armor would remain off -- just some -- just enough for him surely to know she did not regret the kiss.
She was simply too afraid -- too much herself -- to ask for anything more.
