Reiner doesn’t cry.

His eyes get bigger and he stares at distance to hide he is tearing up, but he never lets them fall.

There’re only two (2) times we saw this happening in manga and two of them are in front of Eren while having a massive mental breakdown.

And, there’s only one (1) time he actually let his tears flow and that’s the time we can’t see his eyes and he looks far away.

When he lost Bertolt.

[1/2]I think the question of why Ymir wanted to have Historia live in Marley's hell is a bit wrong directed. I think for Ymir, being alive, albeit a tortured one, is better than being dead (she has been dead once afterall). Being dead to her is the ultimate separation of you from your freedom. There are chances for better future (despite the hardship) if you are alive. There is no chance if you are dead.

           [2/2]And Reiner has promised her to protect Historia. Ymir probably thought that Reiner (and Bertholdt) has certain influence (being selected few to obtain the Shifter power) that allow them to shield Historia from Marley’s worst treatment. And if the worst come to worst, she might used her persona as Ymir reborn to drag attention to her (as potential danger for Eldian’s rebellion) and away from Historia. At least, that’s what I think is in Ymir’s mind. Whether it can work, is different matter.             

I can appreciate Ymir shooting for survival above all else, then worrying about the consequences of how she’s surviving later.

I guess my problems start to show up when you look at Reiner’s part in it. A good deal of his pitch is pointing out that he and Bertolt have a vested interest in Historia’s survival, but what that means potentially involves very little good.

Ymir calls them small fry, and she’s right. Historia’s significance is way above their pay grade, and that makes trusting Reiner and Bertolt in any capacity outside of the physical very risky.

Then the sense I get during their chaotic alliance is that she believes and trusts Reiner when he says they also want to keep Historia alive, and believes that, somehow, some kind of safety exists if Historia’s in their hands.

But if we’re talking about how much freedom means to Ymir… she knows what the safety of a gilded cage looks like, and she’s not a fan. Arguably, she cares so much about Historia staying alive that she’s willing to put that aside, but then you look at her relationship with Historia.

Her wish is for Historia to live her life with pride. Putting that sentiment together with Marley does not compute.

To be fair, none of Ymir’s impulses are really portrayed favorably in this arc, and it might be that this was just one more symptom of that. Desperate humans leaping at life lines is a thing.

It’s just discomfiting with the anime reaching the arc, and knowing, now, what the world Ymir is trusting Historia’s fate to is like. It turns a questionable, but solid, choice into a are you on drugs choice.

And maybe that’s what it’s supposed to look like, but the thought of anyone trusting Marley with an Eldian they love is horrifying. Considering how much of Ymir’s motivation is based in love for Historia, it feels like one more thing that doesn’t quite make sense in her story, so it bugs me.

Eh, what do I know. I’ve said before and I will say a hundred times more that one of the things I like about this series is how clumsily human everyone is. Sometimes incomplete, impulsive decisions just happen, and they aren’t looking to be explained.

A glimmer of hope that’s doomed to be smothered still counts as a glimmer, and maybe Ymir sees something she can work with instead of a trail of exploding dominoes.

…It’s been a while since I’ve thought about this beyond angrished whys. Thank you for that.

I feel like we are getting Levi’s smile next episode. I still think Dimo reeves scene with historia is better than mikasa saying it tho. And it would make much more sense if they include this, because this triggered the punch 🤜 if you know what I mean 🤣

Anyways, I’m excited for this to be animated! Hope they wont screw this up.
