Chapter 117 - Was Reiner projecting?

For an action chapter, there was a surprising amount to discuss this month. While Eren’s expression in the last panel had the most conversation, the discussion of Reiner’s attitude has also been interesting, specifically as to why he wanted to end Eren.

Of the 1300 respondents on the poll this month, 60% believe Reiner was projecting his own misery onto Eren. Only a fraction of the fandom think he sincerely believed Eren is suffering (17%), and an even smaller percentage believe he’s trying to stop the rumbling (14%).

Projection by definition is when you assume someone else is feeling as you do. It’s a self centered view of another person, one lacking consideration, and it’s often wrong.

...I’m just not sure Reiner is doing that. 

When they last spoke, Reiner lay bare his soul to Eren. He admitted to the pain of his existence. He spelled out his shortcoming and the guilt he was experiencing. In the end he begged Eren to kill him. 

Eren responded to Reiner’s admission with one refrain, “I’m the same as you.”

Just before transforming, Eren said it again.”I was right. I’m the same as you.”

I can’t say for certain if Reiner could see Eren’s expression in chapter 104 when he departed Liberio, but at the time, many commented that Eren looked sad. If Reiner did see it, it adds to the evidence that Reiner may believe Eren is suffering as he is. 

It does seem like Reiner and Eren are making eye contact at least.

I’m not adamant about this. In most meta conversations things are rarely black and white. It’s possible there was some projection, but I think it’s just as likely that their last interaction made Reiner believe that he’d not only be saving the world from the rumbling, but that in taking Eren’s life, he’d be ending a former friend’s suffering.

Attack on Titan "World Hero" theory.

I just read chapter 117 and as soon as Magath mentioned Helos my head got spinning.

In the latest chapter Magath says, "We need a true hero like Helos. Someone who will save the world". Now Helos was a person of old time who saved everyone, as you can see Helos attacked a Titan through the mouth. We can also see in chapter 99-100 Tybur talking about Helos. The person playing Helos, their facial features look a lot like Levi's. Who else attacks through the mouth? Kenny and Levi. Going by this we could assume Helos was an Ackerman (and yes I know Helos was Marylean.) Ackerman's get previous Ackermans' battle experience and fighting skills via paths. If Helos is an Ackerman ancestor, then Kenny and Levi must have got that path move from him. (Or Levi could have just got it from Kenny.) Anyway my point is, I'm thinking Mikasa could end up being the hero the SNK world needs, seeing as she has been distanced from Eren now, and Levi is quite injured so he wouldn't be able to fight. Mikasa just may end up becoming the next strongest solider and hero. What do you think?
