3 ships: Like, that I eternally ship? That aren’t just dependent on the current hyperfixation? Probably Boomer (BubbyxCoomer from HLVRAI) because give me them old chaotic gays; platonic Parvill (ParvisxWilliamStrife from Yogscast “Blood and Chaos”); New Dream (RapunzelxEugene from Tangled) because give me a good and healthy straight relationship thanks. 

Last song: “Us Against the Universe” from Candace Against the Universe. It’s a jam and reminds me heavily of old Phineas and Ferb extra-long episode finale songs. Which makes sense.

Last movie: Secret Society of Second-Born Royals. It ain’t bad. Always a sucker for a good DCOM. Or I guess, D+OM? Anyway, the main mentor is the love interest from Pitch Perfect and he’s gay, which is rad, and the villain is Joseph Seed, so that’s cool too. 

Reading: Guardians of Ga’Hoole: The Capture and some ELA lesson plans. We were reading it in class (I’m student teaching a 4th grade class) and we’re moving on to nonfiction, but now my grade school self wants to reread the series so here we go I guess. 

Watching: Nothing. Please give me suggestions. Old things or new things. TV or movies or YouTube series. I just need content.  The realization that I never finished Critical Role Season 1 just hit me, so that, it’s that.

Craving: An omelet. And I’ll make one right after this!

since I’ve been thinking about fungi this morning I wanted to share one of my cherished childhood memories, this sculpture called hypha. I probably spent like 5 hours total chilling out in there, it was a delightful place to be. couldn’t find that many pictures and some of them are comically small but look how cool the night shadows are!

What's your favorite way to pick out color palettes?

uhhh unfortunately: by pulling them directly out of my ass

I hardly ever plan color palettes going into a piece; if I do at all it’s based on generally conceptualizing the setting/environment– setting being how I flesh it out when I get to coloring basically every time. I end up letting the palette be dictated by the lighting/environment– I’ll flat it with “neutral” colors (skin = skin tone, hair = hair color, shirt = whatever color I decide the shirt will be), then figure out where light is coming from and add in a layer of shadows, and THEN decide what color the light is going to be and start adding adjustment layers and color layers based on that, so the whole piece feels coherent!

If I’m not sure what the lighting should be like, I’ll do some really sloppy “test” color images– doing the flats and then throwing messy colors/gradients/etc all over it, saving it, then trying again a different way. Then I’ll pull those up all together and decide between them, and then mimic those colors going forward for the final! I actually have an example of that– here are 2 test color/lighting schemes I worked up for a recent freelance job:

I ended up going with the one on the right, so it ended up looking like this, but I had wanted to try a more monochromatic palette because I wasn’t sure if the other one was too busy!

I had a really freaky dream last night that this thing (that sort of reminded me of the nightmare king?) was trying to posses me or something to do horrible things to the world (which may have been post-apocalyptic) and I felt completely and utterly helpless so I ran away to the moon but it followed me there and I got it to leave me alone by praying my set of prayers twice over.

looking back on it, this is really really sweet, because I decided on that set of prayers when I was having a nightmare when I was little--I promised that I would pray them every night if God made my reoccurring dream go away.
