So, I finished Firefly the other day and am just now getting to posting about it. I had started a draft while I was on like episode 8, but never got to publishing it.
My thoughts on and related to Firefly:
NATHAN FILLION
So, this is the show the internet is mad about. WELL, ME TOO!
Theme song ingrained in my brain within 3 episodes. Like, I felt like I knew it from a past life and couldn't remember the words but I knew it with my soul, type of ingrained. I studied the theme hard so I could sing along with it during the short time I watched the show.
(At episode 6) I like this show. Mentally I know this show is short. Emotionally I am just now getting deeply invested and setting myself up for heartbreak.
I need to go back and watch all the other Nathan Fillion things I have watched and look for all the references to Firefly that I missed.
(On the last episode and after the show) Gorram you Fox! Even Swiper has more decency than you!
In examining my own preferences of steampunky themes and apparently cop shows (Can't wait for Rookie season 7), I now need a steampunk cop show.
Having watched Warehouse 13 and The Librarians directly before watching Firefly, and seeing how well Fillion plays the aloof, loyal, caring, can't-keep-his-hands-off-the-really-cool/shiny-and-probably-dangerous-artifact type characters, I now need an Indiana Jones type adventure, but with Nathan Fillion. Infinite bonus if it has Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwyn, Jewel Staite, and Morena Baccarin starring in it. I would also love if Sean Maher, and especially Summer Glau could also come back. I really want to see Summer in a not mentally ill role, but she mostly does bit parts in stuff that I am not really interested in.
Individual thoughts *SPOILERS*:
Jayne needs to start thinking with his brain, and not the thing between his legs.
I absolutely LOVE when Mal threatens Jayne after he tried to sell River to the Fed's. "You turn on any of my crew, you turn on me" and "Next time you stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face" are beautiful quotes that I will be making a part of my personality despite not having a ship, crew, or having been stabbed in the back
It's interesting to see what aspects of Fillion's personality go with him from character to character. From Mal, to Castle, Cayde-6, and John Nolan. They all care deeply about their crew even if they aren't really good with showing affection, and I can tell that Nathan cares about his people too.
I haven't watched the movie yet. I have it, I just haven't watched it. I've also heard bad things about it. But, I plan to watch it anyway. If it ends poorly I will absolutely be making a headcanon.
I wish so bad that it had lasted longer, but alas, 14 fantabulous episodes, a movie, and our imaginations is all that we have.
Also, does anyone know of any good Firefly fanfics? I would love to read them.
I’ve read “Final Decision” Meteora by Bubble comics and it’s quite cool – it a part of Meteora comics connected with the Time of the Raven – all that awful stuff was so powerful that even had an effect on ships and stations in deep space. So, Space Council (or however it’s called here) without thinking twice decided just to destroy the Earth. So Meteora breaks off her last deal (even though she needed it badly to get clear of debts) and rushes to Earth to rescue it. (spoilers!) Of course, she does it but then she decides to go home and visit her mother, Push and Ziggy hold her back from that because it’s too risky. So, they argue and Ora stays offended. There is also the last seventeenth issue – all dangers are behind and our space smugglers try to get some money, but accidentally with the goods, they get a run-away convict – a human one. Meteora thinks that it’s a good chance for her to communicate with a human being, and then the man tells her that he was her father’s “student” and that her father betrayed him so, the convict is going to revenge her. Push saves Ora and they send the man back to the prison planet, but Meteora now has some hesitations about her father. And at the end, it’s said that the continuation is in “Time of the Raven: Epilogue”. And you remember what else is in that issue? Yes, characters from “Exlibrium”. Now I’m going to read it.
wow way to pick favourites huh? jk i love you thank you!!!
big long answers under the cut
1. What foods do they love, and what foods do they refuse to eat?
billa: she doesn’t have a really vast experience with food to be honest, since food is expensive where she comes from. she prefers protein packs to most other options, like dehydrated protein pellets. she’s had some foods off-world though, mostly on star bases, and she has found that she really likes fish, though she doesn’t like when people mix it with vegetables or spices
2. What is their weapon of choice, and what weapon do they dislike using the most?
analis: she is not trained with any weapon, and there are none available on her planet. there are sharp implements used for cooking, but that’s the closest she’s experienced. besides, her planet has very little violence, due to the empathic connection between all members of their race. she learns to use a lasergun and a bow, and discovers that she doesn’t like either of them. she gets the hang of the laser canon they install on her ship, though
3. What is their preferred method of transportation?
billa: fast. she gets agitated whenever she travels less than FTL, deeming it a waste of time. besides that, she doesn’t really care as long as the ship is in one piece.
4. Who did they look up to the most as a child? Who do they look up to as an adult?
analis: she looked up to her parents when she was a child. they respected her needs and always comforted her when she was upset. it hurt her deeply when they died, even though she had accepted it. as an adult, she looks up to herself.
5. What kind of weather makes them happy, and what kind makes them sad?
billa: most of her time is spent on ship’s and starbases, so any weather always comes as a bit of a shock. she likes snow, though. it makes her feel happy. on her planet it had always rained, sometimes hailed. never had it snowed.
6. What languages do they speak? Do they have any idiosyncrasies or identifiable patterns of speech, word usages, etc?
analis: she only speaks the native language of her race, though she has a translator implant that translates her thoughts into the trade tongue. she doesn’t speak often, since her language is not understood by any of her companions, so she lets her translator speak for her. it speaks in a thin, metallic voice, always a little too formally. sometimes the words don’t translate quite right and slang and expressions are lost in translation
.7. What clothing do they like to wear, and what do they wear most often?
billa: she keeps her clothing practical and comfortable. she prefers not to wear a lot of layers when she can, and she tends to dress lightly. her thick coat of fur keeps her quite warm, and she often finds herself overheating (especially onboard analis’ overly warm ship). she wears simple tank tops and trousers and boots, most of the time. clothes she can fight in. she always keeps at least one laser gun strapped to her hip.
8. Do they eat a healthy diet? A varied one?
analis: her diet is pretty limited, she eats what she can afford. there are fresh vegetables grown on her desert planet, but they are very expensive so she is not privy to that luxury. she mixes the dust-coloured nutrient powder into whatever canned and dried foods she can get her hands on. she eats as much as she can. she slathers all of her food in pickled chili sauce.
9. As a child, what did they want to be when they grew up? Did they realize their dream?
billa: as a child she had wanted to be a mechanic, but that dream was quickly tossed to the side in favour of escaping the strife of her home planet. she became a mercenary instead, like many of her race. it has proven to be many things, some good, some bad.
10. What makes them feel safe or secure? What makes them feel insecure or unsafe?
analis: she feels safe when she is alone, with the hum of her ship to keep her company. she feels unsafe and insecure in the city, with everything buzzing around her at a thousand miles a minute, a whirr of thoughts and feelings and pulsing energies. she feels strange, off-world. a little uncomfortable, and a little scared, but there is a quiet to it that makes her feel safe.
11. What do they do when they need comfort? Do they seek out a person, a food, an activity, etc?
billa: she always goes to squid for comfort. he’s the only one who understands, who knows about her past. he’s the only one who would never judge her, never ask more than she was willing to tell. he’s always happy to be with her when she needs him. she has nightmares, often, and he always lets her crawl in bed with him. he hums to her to help her fall back asleep.
when she’s away on a mission, she hums to herself. when that doesn’t work, she gets out of bed and spends the rest of the night working out, working off her memories.
12. Do they sing or play any musical instruments, even if just for fun? How well?
analis: nope.
13. What decision in their past did they most analyze and fret over after the fact?
billa: she tries to repress the decisions that haunt her, not always very successfully. they pop up in dreams and flashes, and they tug at her and scream into her ears. she isn’t able to forget all the blood on her hands.
14. What are they like when they are drunk?
analis: she has never been drunk. she’s a little loner desert child.
15. Where in their body do they keep stress or tension?
billa: mostly her shoulders and her lower back.
16. What do they think about where they currently live? If they could move elsewhere, would they?
analis: she loves her home planet. it’s her home. but she is ready to leave it. she is ready to get away from all the noise and headache.
17. Do they have any pet peeves or petty dislikes, and how do they react to encountering them?
billa: she doesn’t like when people act too serious, she doesn’t like when the temperature is too warm. she doesn’t like long sleeves, unnecessary vegetables in her food, or naivety. she doesn’t like the colour yellow, or the smell of blood.
18. What foods do they eat most often? Do they enjoy it?
analis: basically already answered. she eats a lot of nutrient powder, eggs, and hot sauce.
19. What is their favorite texture?
billa: she likes soft blankets and soft fur.
20. Do they like to travel? How do they pack and prepare?
analis: she has never traveled beyond the nearest star base, which she has flown back and forth from a hundred times, trying to beat her speed each time. she doesn’t need to pack much, since her ship is her home, but she stocked up on nutrient powder, chili sauce, and spare parts before she left.
21. How well do they take criticism? How do they react to others noticing their flaws?
billa: she does not take criticism. she will fight you before she lets you mention any of her flaws. (unless you’re squid, but he gets a free pass for all the shit she gives him.)
22. What are they like when they get sick? Do they have a particular system (ears, lungs, etc) that illness gravitates to?
analis: her head gets sick. the organ on her head gets sore and achey, and her brain and eyes get foggy. it hurts to think or move. she finds she gets sick more often than others of her race. she’s used to it, at this point. she stows herself away in her ship (as per usual) and lies down with her eyes closed until it stops. the hum of her ship usually helps.
23. What is their favorite drink?
billa: she likes fortified liquid protein supplement #9. it tastes like fish. she drinks water, most of the time, though.
24. How do they react to being physically injured or undergoing medical treatment?
analis: she has never been seriously physically injured. she underwent a number of medical examinations when she was a child because of her headaches and hyper-sensitivity to empathy, but there was nothing physical found to be the cause. her parents told her she was special, that she was closer to the spirits that existed in all of us.
25. What do their hands look and feel like?
billa: her hands are smaller than you’d expect, furry on the backs of her hands. she has a slight point to her nails, evolved down from claws. the palms of her hands are smooth and hairless, though. they sweat profusely when she’s warm.
26. How much do they eat, and how often? Do they drink appetite suppressants (tea, coffee, etc)?
analis: omg why are there so many questions about analis’ eating habits?? she eats nutrient powder!!! hot sauce!!! eggs!!! sometimes even vacuum-sealed dried lanbar peas!!! delicious!!! she does drink a steeped drink very similar to tea. it is very popular on her planet for its calming properties.
27. Do they have children? Do they want children? What names would they choose?
billa: no and no. if she had to have children she would name them ‘no’ and send them right back where they came from.
28. What is a gift that they have received that was especially touching or significant?
analis: her people all wear bands of metal on their right arm to symbolize age and status. her parents each gave her one of their bands at her coming of age ceremony, shortly before they passed on. she wears them proudly.
29. How do they arrange or decorate their living space?
billa: she doesn’t usually live places for very long, but she ensures she always has a punching bag, some weights, and a place to put her guns.
30. Do they have any allergies or chronic conditions?
analis: she is allergic to crowds. she has a chronic condition where she has hyper sensitive empathic and technopathic abilities, causing her intense pain from over-stimulation when she is in a highly populated or busy area. she is quite secluded.
