Three new Toxodentidae specimens have been added to the collection!
In other news, I got one *hell* of a look when I referred to the Occlupanids I keep in a little terrarium on my shelf as "show Occlupanids"

Everyone looooooves looking at my cool skull collection, but when I wanna add to it, it's suddenly all "oh dear God" and "you are not putting that in my fucking car"
4.24.24 | went out into the field today to do some plant collections to create some preserved specimens for our school’s herbarium! I’m really excited to see how they press and I felt extremely academic while doing it.

Wandering Bones Learning Experience #7
I need to start bringing a pack for collecting large bones when I go into nature, as I've been surprised with a fox, a badger and most of a seabird recently. I had to leave the fox overnight because I had nothing to put him in, and hope he was there when I went back the next morning.
I'm thinking of setting up a small rucksack that I can at least leave in the car. It should have
At least 2 bin bags
At least 2 sturdy shopping bags
Some sandwich bags
A knife
Disposable plastic gloves
Gardening gloves
String
Hand sanitiser
Bandana (face mask or keeps my hair back)
Plastic box/tub for rare finds
First aid kit
How To Collect A Nasopharyngeal Swab
Collect specimens within the first 24-72 hours of onset of symptoms and no later than 5 days after onset of symptoms.
Have the patient blow his/her nose to remove excess mucous and tilt their head back.
Insert swab into one nostril all the way to the nasopharynx (resistance will be felt).
Rotate swab over surface of posterior nasopharynx for 10-15 seconds.
Withdraw swab from collection site; insert into transport tube and break swab at the score mark.
After collection, immediately transport specimen to the laboratory for testing. If transport to the laboratory is delayed, place specimen on ice or refrigerate.
Selecting the best sterile nasal swabs for PCR testing is essential for obtaining high-quality specimens and achieving reliable molecular diagnostic results.
