SWIRL/SPIRAL LORE pt 1🌀

[TW: suicide attempt, self harm, mentions of abuse, (subtle) bullying, implied transphobia(?)]

Swirl was born in New York. She was an only child, growing up with rather strict religious parents who have often verbally and emotionally abused her (sometimes physically if she did something REALLY bad). Her family wasn’t exactly ‘wealthy’ but they had enough money to keep them afloat, living in the country away from people. Swirl doesn't really remember much about her parents. In fact, most of her childhood memories were filled with yelling and arguments. She doesn't even remember if they ever gave her a name. Her real name is actually “Shylee”, but she was simply referred to as ‘kid’. She didn’t exactly have a ‘name’ until her parents noticed Swirl’s fascination with spirals when she was four. None of her family knows why or how this obsession started-it just did. At some point her parents started calling her “spiral child”. Was it because of her obsession? Until now the reason why is unknown. Despite their strict and abusive parenting, there were times where they still treated her well. One time her dad taught her how to hunt and use a knife to defend herself. Her mother taught her important life skills like cooking and such. Growing up Swirl was a very independent kid. Whenever her parents were very busy with their work, and she wasn’t in school, she’d have a lot of free time. Swirl used most of this time to daydream away-creating her own little world. Swirl was an early bloomer but also led to her maturing at a young age. Her thoughts and early maturing were what made her different from most people. In school, she never bothered to talk to anyone, always keeping her thoughts and dreams to herself. This led to her being isolated from her class. Yes, some classmates have tried to be friends with her, but they all either saw her as “annoying” or “weird” when they saw her true colors. Because of that, Swirl never had any childhood friends nor any close ones she can recall- which made her isolation and chronic loneliness even worse. She did well in school, got good grades and such, but mentally she wasn’t the best. Not only was she lonely asf, but she also used to get bullied. Often there was this group of boys in her class who would bully her for a lot of reasons. Mostly because she was ‘transgender’ (she isn’t btw), she was asian, or because she simply existed. It continued like this for years. It wasn’t until middle school did things seem to change. Swirl had a friend around that time. A girl named Jayce. They both were pretty close, had a few things in common, sat with each other and talked-friend stuff. Despite their close friendship there was a problem. Swirl’s friend was one HELL of a bitch to everyone else. They were extremely sexist to the men in her class, they manipulated and forced Swirl into doing things without her consent, and overall they used Swirl like shit. Then she got herself into more trouble with other classmates and her grades started to slip- making her parents pissed. Eventually she cracked under the pressure and fell into a depressive state. For YEARS she struggled with mild depression and suicidal thoughts but never told anyone. She struggled with self-harm and nearly killed herself twice (OD). Spiral was put into therapy when her parents caught on but it didn’t last long (financial struggles). Then high school came and things started to turn around for the better. One, she got a loving girlfriend! Two, she moved schools, so she won’t have to worry about her past bullies harassing her. So everything would be fine, right? No. Not exactly. Despite her bullies going to a different school, another group of bullies started to pick on her. Spiral did gain some friends during this time, who helped her get over the bullying, but eventually she isolated herself from them-assuming it was ‘for the better’. The only person keeping her together was Adalyn. However, by her junior year, Adalyn had to move to Russia for family reasons. Then college hit, and from there it was pretty much a ‘blur’ (I’m done writing ts💔)

Time to answer a question everyone needs answered: how do sparkthrowers/guns work exactly?

I lied no one really needs this answered but I do so here you go!

In the tutorial, Boochbeard warns us of spark throwers, saying: "Careful of those sparkthrowers! They'll stun you into submission-- that's how guns work in the spiral."

Now this is probably to make the game more kid friendly but obviously I need l o r e so here are my thoughts: ->

The guns shoot sparks of electricity, but how? I personally believe it is through the use of 'lumina crystals.' These are crystals that are charged with storm magic in a mill in Triton Avenue(w101). Lumina crystals cut small, so essentially you can 'socket' them into the gun and take them out once they need to be recharged.

Now if you want a gun that doesn't need a recharge, I assume there are expensive options-- for example, a gun that is enchanted with storm magic.

Okay so everything described here doesn't need bullets, in fact bullets aren't shown due ya know kidz but then

Anyways since metal is a conductor I'm assuming maybe it's just charged?? Make bullet and spark MAKE SENSE KINGSISLE PLEASE I SWEAR-

Last but not least injuries. Since it is electricity wounds will mostly be burns, but enough electricity can kill a person.

To break it down here are symptoms and what happens during electrical shock:

• Outside Body

Can have visible burns but in some cases you look normal. For a sparkthrower, since it shoots out, I'd assume it'd be mostly burns.

• Inside Body

Moving electrical currents can cause damage to organs/stuff around them and cardiac arrest.

- Symptoms

Headache, loss of consciousness, muscle spasms, numbness/tingling, trouble breathing, vision/hearing issues, seizures, and irregular heartbeat.

<- The shock also has a chance to cause Compartment Syndrome.

Last but not least, handling. Handling a lumina crystal is probably safe as it is in a solid form, but I'd be wary if it's cracked or so.

The most important thing is to not touch the barrel while the sparkthrower is being shot or for some time after. You don't want to accidentally electrocute yourself!

I have a question. I don’t know how much this would contradict with lore, but I’m going to ask it anyway.

What if was revealed that The Rat was the first king of Bastion and originator of both the Burrowers, the Hoppers of the Khonda Desert, and basically all rodent folk of the Spiral, but the Burrowers betrayed Rat and because of that, they were treated favorably by Grandmother Raven and rewarded to be the forces of Light fighting against the Spider’s Arachna forces? Or something like that idk.

And that somehow lead to the Mantises and Bees siding with the Umbra Legion as we see in Khrysalis’s Storyline, so on and so forth?

Either way, I always had this headcanon that the Rat had plans to betray his father later and take over as the ultimate supreme leader of the new first world or whatever the fuck Spider wants to turn the Spiral into. He had created the Burrowers and the Hoppers and whatnot to be his loyal servants and soldiers, apart from the Cabal and the Arachna Spiders, but that ended up failing for whatever reason. Whether that be influence from someone else (like the Bat), or the Burrowers (just gonna mention them for now on) just had enough of Rat’s shit, idk.

I just thought it would be interesting to think about. I assume the Rat is that old/old enough to have found an entire race of people?
