As you guys know, for the past year I’ve been talking about wanting to get some forearm crutches. Well, for the past couple of months it has become obvious that my legs are getting a lot worse due to more frequent dislocations and subluxations, muscle weakness, pain, fatigue, etc, so walking has become a very very difficult task for me. This has affected me being able to go grocery shopping, go out with friends, walk around in my school, and it has caused me to miss some classes because I have been unable to walk from residence to the main campus at my college.
I have also noticed that if I stand for more than a couple minutes (or on bad days, seconds) then my legs become extremely painful, they shake, and my hips dislocate. Forearm crutches would be super helpful and they would grant me more mobility so I would be able to walk and stand for longer which means less missing class and more going out with friends (aka acquaintances that I want to be friends with but are unable to because I’ve had to turn down hanging out with them because they always go to far places by walking).
My problem is that my parents are really unsupportive of all of my conditions and refuse to even consider them as disabilities so I’m assuming that they will not want me to get any type of mobility devices.
I was wondering if anyone else is in or has been in a similar situation and if you have any advice as to how to mention it to ableist parents??
I was thinking of maybe telling my mom that while I was in the emergency room I talked to a doctor about it and just building a lie around that??? Idk, I am just struggling a lot and forearm crutches (specifically Ergobaum crutches) would be extremely helpful.
