me:
One year later
A year ago today I went to the ER for extreme abdominal pain. That was the start of "I have no idea what could be causing pain this bad." That was what sent me to Mayo Clinic. That was what made me drop out of college. A year later and I'm back in school, making friends, and I have a diagnosis and treatment. Except today the pain is back and I'm having flashbacks. What if I have to drop out again? What if I'll be bedridden for 8 months again? What if my life comes to a screeching halt again? I like to think I can handle it because I have the support I need, but I'm still terrified. Wish me luck folks.
Just took my first dose of aimovig! Here's to hoping I'll get some migraine relief 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
"Because of state laws...
I'm only allowed to give you 3 days worth of pain meds." That's what my doctor told me as I was being released from the hospital. I have one of the most painful infections one can get. I was in the hospital for 3 days, septic, hooked up to dilaudid the entire time. If I had waited a couple hours to go to the ER, I would've had organ failure. My pain isn't as bad so I can get away with just taking loratab. But state law decides how much medicine I need instead of my doctor. The only people who should decide my medical treatment are my doctors and nurses. Instead, the government who knows nothing of me and my situation decides how much relief I need.
Doctors don’t realize when they say “Come back in six months and we’ll see if the treatment is working,” or when they say “Sorry, you won’t be able to get treatment for another couple months,” that that’s my life still being on hold. It’s that much longer being in pain. It’s that much longer being bedridden for me. It’s that much more of my life being robbed from me. I’m supposed to be having fun with friends, staying out late, making stupid mistakes, even just fucking going to college. But my entire life is on hold until doctors can get their shit together. And I’m sick of it. I’m sick of being told to wait. How much longer am I supposed to wait? How much more of my life am I supposed to miss? I just want to live my life. To be able to spontaneously make memories with friends. To keep studying. To help people. But I’m stuck in bed for who knows how much longer.
Today I got the prescription from my doctor to get a handicap placard and my own wheelchair. On the one hand I'm so glad he's actually doing what I need and trusting I know what I need. On the other hand it's setting in that this is permanent. I may learn to cope with it better but it'll always be there

I am switching antipsychotics, and the process has been hell. The new med makes me sore, and on top of that, I get so much withdrawal from my old med that it gets hard to think straight. I spent all day feeling like utter shit. I'm switching back and forth as I wean off my old med and it's like a rollercoaster. They say that I'll get steadier once I'm completely on my new med and that the soreness will go away with time. I wish this wasn't just a long agonizing process. I just want to feel like myself again.
