A range of Tulipa (tulip) cultivars create an eye-catching display in the raised beds of Inverness Botanic Garden, Scotland. They were under planted with blue flowering Viola (pansy) and Myosotis sylvatica (forget-me-not) cultivars.

The early tulip Darwin Hybrid cultivars are providing a splash of colour in the garden, including Tulipa ‘Light and Dreamy’. At Great Dixter, Sussex, they were in a container and in a border paired with a ruby coloured Erysimum (wallflower). This tulip cultivar has goblet-like flowers with pink flamed mauve-purple fading to almost white at the edge and are held on strong stems that are an unusual purple colour.

The silvery carpet of foliage, with whorls of deep pink flowers, produced by Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver' (dead nettle) is being used to contrast with an edging of the dark foliage from Ajuga reptans 'Braunherz' (bugle) in the winter bedding display at the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, London. In the spring the Narcissus (daffodil) will emerge to complete the display and delight visitors to the Palm House.

An abstract river of blue flowering Myosotis sylvatica ‘Bluesylva’ (forget-me-not) with pink flowered Bellis ‘Tasso Strawberries and Cream’ (daisy) still provides a display at the end of the spring bedding season even though the tulips have been removed. This example was in the gardens of Hampton Court Palace, near London, and will soon be removed and replaced by a summer display.

Looking like a choice from the sweet shop Primula vulgaris 'Bellerose' (double primrose) are on display at florist shops and garden centres. They have clusters of double flowers in salmon pink and peach shades arising from a central rosette of leaves. These herbaceous perennials are intended as pot plants for cool temperature rooms and outdoor containers, they are often not as vigorous in a garden location.
