Potential Pathogen
These yellow spheres are Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on the surface of a human immune cell (blue). They are found in, and on, about a third of the human population and are generally harmless except, that is, for when they’re not. S. aureus can cause severe and potentially fatal infections of the skin, soft tissues, bone and blood, and especially dangerous are the drug-resistant strains – so called, methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The bacteria were thought to mainly inhabit the skin and nose, but recent research shows they are most abundant in the gut. This discovery led researchers to test whether probiotics – oral doses of friendly bacteria – could suppress S. aureus colonisation. And they could – by around ninety-five percent. Probiotics work more slowly than traditional antibiotics for tackling infections, but they can be taken for much longer without harm, and will likely be able to tackle MRSA strains when regular drugs cannot.

The Importance of the Medical University of South Carolina Study on Nozin Nasal Sanitizer for Infection Control

Why are these results significant? It is commonly believed that the primary reservoir for the pathogen Staph aureus is the vestibule of the nose. Now, it has been shown that carriage can be reduced using a commercially available ethanol based antiseptic, Nozin Nasal Sanitizer. Additionally, use of this trusted antiseptic will not likely contribute to the rise in antibiotic resistance, an important issue in infection control. As stated in another study on the role of nasal carriage, “Staphylococcus aureus is a frequent cause of infections in both the community and hospital. Worldwide, the increasing resistance of this pathogen to various antibiotics complicates treatment of S. aureus infections. Effective measures to prevent S. aureus infections are therefore urgently needed. It has been shown that nasal carriers of S. aureus have an increased risk of acquiring an infection with this pathogen. The nose is the main ecological niche where S. aureus resides in human beings…”1
