Absolute Hawkman and DC’s Golden Age Reborn in Absolute Evil #1

Over the weekend, DC confirmed at Retailer Day during Rose City Comic Con 2025 that Absolute Hawkman will debut in Absolute Evil #1, written by Al Ewing, with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Stefano Nesi — hitting shelves October 1. A glimpse of him can already be seen on the cover to the first issue.

DC’s Director of Special Sales, Greg Gustin, also teased that the series will introduce “a couple of new Absolute heroes — or maybe anti-heroes.” Along those lines, Bleeding Cool revealed rumored timeline-style story descriptions of the Absolute Golden Age characters making their debut (SPOILERS AHEAD):

The Sandman (1939): Wesley Dodds becomes the Sandman but is assassinated soon after. The U.S. government seizes his equipment and uses it to develop new nerve gas weapons for World War II.

Wildcat (1941): Ted Grant investigates safety breaches in the creation of these weapons, but he’s bought off to keep quiet.

Hawkman (1951): Hawkman collaborates with the House Un-American Activities Committee, ratting out fellow heroes as communists.

Iron Munro (1950s): Originally created to stand in for Superman during that era, Iron Munro is dragged into the HUAC investigation. He refuses to name names, but his reputation is destroyed, and he ultimately dies in a government chemical accident.

This dark reimagining of DC’s Golden Age heroes sets the stage for a world where the government successfully maintained order and control—until now. With Absolute Wonder Woman wielding innate authority, Absolute Superman inspiring rebellion, and Absolute Batman refusing to be bought off, the balance of power is beginning to unravel.
