“Ted, for the love of God,” Pete says as they walk up the steps to the Lauter house, “Please be on your best behavior today.”
Ted rolls his eyes. “Yeah, yeah, I know. Good impressions and all that shit.”
Side-eyeing his brother, Pete emphasizes, “I mean it. I really like Steph. I want this to go well. It’s a big deal for Mr. Lauter to invite us over for Christmas.”
Softening slightly at that, Ted frees up a hand so he can pat Pete on the back. “I know.”
Pete takes a deep breath before pressing the doorbell. From inside, he can hear the chimes announcing their presence.
The door opens to reveal Solomon Lauter, dressed in a nice pajama set with a robe over it. “Hello Peter.” He gives the briefest of smiles before turning his gaze to the older Spankoffski. “Theodore.”
“Solomon,” Ted greets as respectfully as possible. “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas to the two of you as well.” Solomon steps back, allowing them entrance into his home.
Pete steps forward, trying not to gawk at the inside of the house. Steph’s been over to his and Ted’s apartment, but he’s never been over here before. Gulping slightly, he follows Solomon to the den. There’s a large, real Christmas tree, festively adorned and looking like it belongs in a magazine. In the large fireplace, there’s a fire roaring, casting the whole room in a warm glow.
“Make yourselves comfortable,” Solomon says before giving Ted a warning look.
Having set down the gifts he carried in, Ted holds up his hands defensively for a moment before sitting down to unlace his boots.
There’s the sound of footsteps before Steph appears in the living room. Her hair is messy from sleep and she’s still in her pajamas as well, but she lights up when she sees Pete. “Merry Christmas,” she bids before pulling him into a kiss.
“Woo, yeah! Get it, Pete!” Ted catcalls.
Pete turns red as he returns the kiss. When he and Steph break apart, he sees Solomon shaking his head. Somehow, it all feels natural, right.
It feels like his little family just got a little bigger.
