#JackedKirby - An Explosion at Castle Rakenstein!!! 💥💥💥 The Demon is one of our personal favorite Kirby series here at Jacked Kirby, and one of the definitive reasons we love it so much is the abundance of splash pages that Kirby incorporated into the run... especially the TWO PAGE beauties that litter the 18 issues of the series. Never one to waste one inch of space, Kirby was notorious for squeezing maximum potential out of every inch of layout, especially in these two page monstrosities! 💥💥💥 Take this double splash that comes right after the opening splash page of #Issue13 (published Oct of 1973). Three consecutive splash pages to open an issue... and the amount of action and mayhem Kirby managed to squeeze into this double page is off the charts. We see Dr Rakenstein and his evil assistant Igor reeling from the explosions erupting in his lab around them... debris and equipment flying through the air, skeletons and lab samples scattered through the flames! And Etrigan is right there, taking it all in and trying to apprehend his nemesis! (Pic 1). 💥💥💥 Pics 2/3 of this post are close ups of each half of the dual page spread... you gotta love the signature Kirby HANDS on Dr Rakenstein (pic 2) and the wonderful use of “Kirby Krackle” to accentuate the flames around Igor from the explosions (pic 3). The craziest part about this spread has to be that The Demon himself is flying dynamically through the air in a death-defying move and yet he is one of the most underwhelming figure in the whole spread!!! I’ve always liked Steve Rude’s art. He’s had a tough couple of years with a son who needed major surgery. He’s got a Kickstarter going for a sketchbook collection of five years worth of commission and convention art. Check it out!

“The ABC’s of The Joker” - W is for “World’s Finest”: Ever since 1940’s World’s Fair Magazine and World’s Best Comics issue 1 in Spring of 1941, Batman and Superman have been known as “World’s Finest” in DC Comics and close allies long before they were seen as enemies, popularized in Frank Miller’s “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns”. Whether in their decades long publication “World’s Finest Comics” or in ‘Imaginary Stories’ (today’s Elseworlds), the Man of Steel’s bright exterior and the Caped Crusader’s dark shadows were juxtaposed just right to create a brilliant story. A great example that also features our highlighted villain comes in David Gibbons and Steve Russ’s three issue arc “World’s Finest” from 1990. When Lex Luther and The Joker have devious schemes up their sleeves, they decide to strike them in opposite cities: Lex in Gotham City and Joker in Metropolis. Superman and Batman decide to handle their respected rogue in the other’s home town. While Superman’s methods are drastically different from Batman’s and our celebrate hero is more than territorial about Gotham, the two have to work together to stop their greatest enemies all while discovering they aren’t as night and day as they expected. The Clown Prince of Crime’s antics and mannerisms illustrated by Rude play up the 'clown’ in his name but still shows off his devilish qualities, bringing another interpretation to this classically told character. ✌🏼💜💚🃏📚
