”Being fat isn’t a choice but help is available” or something like that was said on an ad on television today.
The mood of the ad was somber as if fatness is a disease that could kill you at any moment. the ad also showed the fat woman’s partner and their kid, as if to say ”hey, by being fat you put down your whole family because you could die at any moment and leave them alone on this earth”.
I have no idea what the ad is actually advertising besides a website on weight-loss. They might be advertising some pills or surgery or something through their website, but I refuse to click on their website to give them ad revenue.
But the point is, that’s very harmful, right? Depicting fatness as a disease that will kill you at any moment. That’s literally not true or based on any research on fat people, no research says most fat people will drop dead suddenly or super early in their lives. The worst estimate I’ve seen has been that ”morbidly obese” people die like, I don’t remember exactly what the number was, but it was somewhere between 12-14 years earlier than the avarage. And that’s the WORST estimate I’ve seen. Other estimates I’ve seen have been about 4 years for other non-”morbidly obese” fat people. Meanwhile for overweight people (I hate that word but it is what research uses) there are a lot of studies where the results show ”overweight” individuals actually live longer than the avarage.
And also, it’s such bs to pretend like you care about fat people and then market us some kind of a solution. ”Help is available” for what? A f*cking type of body? My f*cking body?
It just screams of trying to act sympathetic towards us fat people but still trying to get us to completely change our body as if our bodies were the same thing as a f*cking addiction that we could get rid of without literally changing the way our bodies look drastically.
Pretending to be sympathetic for fat people while offering us a ”solution” is bs. It’s unethical. And it scares me that this is the first time in my life that I’m seeing anti-fatness ads, while people’s attitudes towards fat people are constantly getting worse. Wake up people.
