i think one of the reasons i love arirang so much - aside from the fact that it's literally incredible not a single skip 10/10 all bangers - is that it is an album that only bts could make. i won't develop how the concept of arirang the song and its meaning in suited to bangtan specifically, even tho it's true, other people can and have said it much better than i could, but in the lyrics, like imagine another group singing "came back for what's mine" it would feel out of place and dare i say cringe, but it doesn't with bts because yeah they bowed out at the height of their fame and gdi now they are back, that's just a fact. all the kpoppies saying they wish their group had done hooligan, but crucially their groups didn't and they couldn't, it is imbued with bts's chaotic energy and their characteristic wordplay. what other group has been so impacted by racism and xenophobia - confronted it so head on - with enough confidence to coolly and decidedly call out those that speak against them?? say what you want about bts, but they took on the brunt of the discrimination when they started breaking out in the west, and it isn't their fault that other groups couldn't capitalise on the path they'd beaten out for them. i really could go track by track pointing out lyrics that are so personal to bangtan's experience and history as a group, as much as people like to say that the lyrics on arirang are somehow lacking compared to past albums, there really is no way to give any single one of these songs and have them be able to honestly and earnestly perform it. and that's just the mic drop truth

author notes - ignore typosss, this was not proof read at ALL haha. not too confident in this doing well, mostly bc i can't find ot7 bts in this kind of format this often anymore. but was really fun to write!! (as well as quick) （ ´∀｀）☆

"have you ever actually tried to hide your identity?" jimin asked from their couch as jungkook swung through the dorms open living room window.

"the mask provides perfect secrecy." he replied with a roll of his eyes, flopping down onto the other end of the couch with a huff.

"i'm sure it would if you didn't pull it off mid swing because you can't breathe." he countered with snark as taehyung walked into the room sporting a bowl of discoloured cereal.

"also, swinging directly to your house with no attempt to cover the route definitely doesn't help hide your identity." taehyung said around a bite of his cereal.

"my spidey-senses will tell me if anyone is following me hyung."

"you can't rely on your spidey-senses for everything kook," he said with a jab of his spoon at jungkooks sprawled out form, "you need to build up good routines if you want to continue being spiderman safely."

"yeah well i don't need to rely on spidey-senses to know that your cereal is expired."

"shit."

"how do you not notice when the supposed brightly coloured cereal is expired when they're all various shades of green." jimin said with furrowed brows and a pointed look in taehyungs direction, who elected to not reply in turn of stirring his forest of cereal.

after a beat of silence, jungkook suddenly sat up before scrambling behind the couch in an attempt to hide. any means of asking what he was doing from jimin, not taehyung (who was still briefly contemplating whether or not he should throw up), were quietened at the sound of keys turning in the front doors lock.

the sounds of the four older members were heard through the closed door, barely heard over the loud shuffling coming from jungkook as he tried to slip off his suit as quick as possible.

he managed to get it off, leaving him par of clothes besides a pair of briefs and socks. the next step quickly becoming deciding between probably being caught by the hyung line toeing off their shoes in the hallway in his attempt to sneak past to the bedrooms, or just owning up to the fact he went out as spiderman.

before this could happen however, it seems taehyung had decided to choose for him, calling out, "seokjin-hyunggg, jungkookie went out as spiderman again."

jungkook could almost hear jin firing up to yell at him for going out as spiderman, probably only couldn't due to jimins loud laughter at his exposure.

making a quick and obviously smart decision, because jungkook is spiderman and can think fast, he decides to quickly pull on his mask and make a beeline for the window.

the four older members pile into the living room, half ready to scold the arachnid and the other half ready to stand behind the two lecturers and make funny faces in attempts to get the maknae a longer lecutre, all watch in mild horror as said maknae flies out the window with only his mask on.

#nakedspiderman trended for a week after that day. no amount of scrubbing the internet could get rid of all the videos of the hero laughing as he swung through buildings baring only a mask, briefs, and socks.
