“hey could i request one where bucky and steve have lately been very short with the reader and eventually snap at reader when they’re stressed about something and before they get a chance to make up, she goes on a mission to clear her head and put some space between them, which ends up taking a turn for the worst and she comes really close to dying?” - anonymous
“heyy i saw your last stucky x reader story and it was amazing! could i request another one where the reader almost died on the mission but doesn't seem to be bothered by it, but steve and bucky are a fuming mess and go off on her (which she fights back) but eventually causing her to snap and breakdown?” - anonymous
The sound of your soft footsteps bounced off the walls of the empty hallway. The compound seemed abandoned today, as opposed to it’s normally hectic environment. There was always a mission going on or work to be done.
Not today.
You passed by the briefing room and saw Steve and Bucky sitting at the long sleek table. The table was littered with files, newspaper clippings, and countless empty coffee cups.
Being their girlfriend, you knew that they had had something on their minds for the past few weeks. You always knew when something was taking their focus. They would spend all day in that briefing room until they were falling asleep in their seats.
You noticed the stressed looks on both of their faces. You swung the door open and entered the room. Neither of them looked up to greet you.
“Hey, you two” you said, slowly walking towards the table. Their faces remained emotionless. You knew they weren’t trying to be rude, but sometimes they paid more attention to work than to you. “What do you need?” Steve asked, coldly. His eyes never moved up from the mission report in front of him. It was like you were invisible to them.
You held back from letting your emotions get the best of you. “You both seem really exhausted. Why won’t don’t I take you both out for lunch?” You asked, moving to stand behind Steve. You leaned against the back of his chair, reaching your hands over his shoulders and caressing his chest.
You were worried that they were overworking themselves. They may have been super soldiers, but they were still human. You knew they needed a break.
“Can’t you see we’re kind of busy?” Bucky snapped. He finally looked up at you, but it was with an annoyed expression. You huffed to yourself before storming out of the room.
They had been like this for too long. It had been three weeks of hell with them acting distant. You had had enough. You understood that their work was important, but so were you.
You marched into the lab where Tony and Bruce were running various tests. Their eyes both went wide as they saw the anger in your eyes. “Tony, I want a mission” you commanded, crossing your arms.
You needed your own space to clear your head. You needed to focus on anything other than Steve and Bucky. You needed to get out of the compound.
“You want to talk first?” Bruce offered, trying to diffuse the situation. He knew to back off once you shook your head. “Nat is going on a mission. It’s pretty standard. She can fill you in on the jet” Tony told you. He knew better than to try and argue with you when you were angry.
Natasha was shocked when you asked to join her on the mission, but could tell from the look in your eyes that you were running from something. She didn’t push you, figuring you’d tell her if you wanted to.
The mission was pretty routine. It wasn’t anything you hadn’t done a thousand times before. It should have been easy, but you messed it up.
You thought going on a mission would help clear your head. In reality, you jeopardized the mission because your mind was only focused on Steve and Bucky.
You and Natasha had gotten cornered by one of the soldiers at the base you were infiltrating. He had cornered you both and had his gun aimed at your head. “You’re not going anywhere” he growled, as he radioed for backup.
Without any kind of thought, you lunged forward to talk the gun out of his hand. Your mind was racing, and you were reaching for the gun before your brain could even process that you were doing it.
You heard the loud bang of a gunshot as you tackled the soldier. Then, you heard another as Natasha shot the soldier. You saw the blood pooling near his stomach.
With your adrenaline high, you instantly turned to Natasha. “Are you okay? Where did he hit you?” You asked, looking up and down for any blood. You felt her hands grab onto your arms. “The bullet hit you, not me” she told you.
Your heart stopped. Your eyes rolled down to see the blood that was currently dripping from your side. You hadn’t even noticed in the heat of things. Natasha swooped her arm around your side, acting as your human crutch as you both ran towards the exit.
“Don’t you die on me. Rogers and Barnes will never forgive me” she said, trying to keep you from passing out. Your mind drifted to Steve and Bucky. You wondered if you’d ever see them again.
It became harder and harder for you to keep your eyes open. Just as your feet made it onto the metal floor of the jet, you felt your legs give out from below you. The only thought in your head was of Steve and Bucky. You wondered if they would ever hold you again as everything went black. “Stay with me” Natasha yelled, catching you before you could hit your head on the ground.
A banging sound echoed around your head, causing you to groan. As your eyes opened to find the source of the noise, you realized you were in the infirmary. The beeping sound was coming from the monitor beside you.
Then, you saw Steve and Bucky both sitting beside you. You saw the relief wash over them as your eyes opened. You wanted to share their relief, but you didn’t. You weren’t any less mad at them just because you had gotten hurt.
“How’re you feeling?” Bucky asked, reaching forward for your hand. You pulled it away before he could touch you. Instead, you crossed your arms. “I’m fine. It’s nothing” you dismissed, barely even looking at either of them.
Their concerned expressions changed within a matter of seconds. They went from worried to outraged. “It’s nothing? You almost fucking died, and you want to act like nothing happened?” Steve snapped, cocking his eyebrow at you. You remained silent, focusing on the wall in front of you and neither of them.
“Do you really not care? You were reckless. What were you thinking? You risked your own safety and Nat’s. It was stupid” Bucky criticized. You knew part of what he was saying was true, but that didn’t get them off the hook.
You began to unplug yourself from the monitoring equipment. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize you two were my parents. Don’t worry, I’ll come to you the next time I need someone to give me a lecture about my actions” you snapped back, heading for the door. They didn’t give up this time. They followed behind you.
You didn’t stop until you got to the empty living room. “Why are you still following me? I’m done talking to you both” you yelled. You were fed up with them.
“We are still having a conversation. Even if you decide to storm off because we called out for acting stupid” Steve snapped. He was practically dripping with rage. You couldn’t help but roll your eyes; it only made him more angry. “You almost got yourself killed. You should get suspended from missions until you learn how to keep your emotions in check” Bucky growled.
Their anger only increased when you laughed. You genuinely laughed. They were standing there as though they were in charge of you. “What the fuck is so funny to you?” Steve asked, throwing his hands up in the air.
You moved closer to him, getting in his face. “You are not in charge of me, and neither are you. You don’t get to walk around and act like you’re my boss. If you really think that that is how this works, then we should just break up” you said, shoving your finger into Steve’s chest before storming off to your room.
It wasn’t until later that night that you heard from them again. Around dinner time, there was a knock at your bedroom door. You knew it was them, but you answered the door anyway.
When you opened the door, you saw them both standing there with apologetic expressions. You crossed your arms. You weren’t going to let them off the hook that easy. “Can we come in?” Bucky asked, gently. You shrugged your shoulders before walking back over to your bed. They followed you inside and shut the door behind themselves.
“Honey, we’re really sorry” Steve said, holding his arms out to you. You ignored him, staying seated. They both knew it would take more than a half-assed apology to get you to forgive them. “We shouldn’t have yelled. We were just upset and worried about you. We never want to see you get hurt” Bucky said, sitting down beside you.
You didn’t respond for a minute. “You both should be sorry. It was your fault that I went on that mission anyway. You’ve both been dicks to me for three weeks. So, I went on the mission to clear my head, and I got hurt. You both couldn’t even act concerned. All you could was yell at me and tell me how stupid I was” you snapped back.
You could see the guilt in both of their faces. They knew they had screwed up, but they didn’t know how to fix it.
“I’m so sorry that we were jerks to you. We just got caught up in some work. It will never happen again” Steve said, sitting on your other side and kissing your cheek. “Can you forgive us, doll?” Bucky asked, reaching out to hold your hand.
“Fine, but you have to make it up to me” you said, looking between the both of them. You saw mischievous smirks on both of their faces. You slapped both of their arms. “I’m not talking about sex, you morons” you huffed, standing up from the bed. Both of their eyes went wide as they jumped up from your bed.
You noticed their urgent expressions. “I’ll order pizza from that Italian place you like” Steve said, rushing out of the room. You looked over at Bucky, who you could tell was still thinking. “And I’ll get dessert from that little bakery” he said, pecking your cheek before leaving as well.
You smiled contently to yourself as you relaxed back into your bed. They could be idiots sometimes, but you loved them.
They both showed up twenty minutes later with some of your favorite foods. You all ate while watching your favorite movie. They made sure to cuddle you throughout the movie.
“I love you both” you said, softly as you laid in their arms. They both smiled down at you before telling you they loved you too.
Later that night, they found another way to make it up to you.

“Watch where you’re putting that thing!”
“That was completely your fault.”
“It’s in my hair!”
“Oh my god, just wash it out.”
“I’m a sticky mess!”
“What’s new?”
Sam sighed as he listened to the two men bickering in the kitchen. Why he agreed to live with them was beyond him. He decided to just turn around slowly and head back for the door. He had a long day and figured that having a drink at the bar was a good idea. That way the two idiots could get cleaned up and calmed down by the time he was home.
He took a step towards the door but didn’t notice the broom sitting next to his foot. The broom went tumbling to the floor and Sam winced.
“Sam?! Is that you?” Steve yelled from the kitchen.
“Uh yeah. I think I’m just gonna head out though,” he yelled back.
“Nonsense, we’re making dinner,” Bucky shouted. Sam took a deep breath and walked towards the kitchen area. He mentally prepared himself before walking into the disaster zone.
“Guys! What the hell?” Sam’s eyes widened when he saw sauce covering the counters and the fridge. Bucky had a dollop or two in his hair and Steve’s cheek was smeared with it. It looked like they went to war with a blender and suffered a defeat.
“Well you see what happened was-“
“It was all him!”
“What the fuck? No it-“
“Both of you just shut up and get this cleaned up!” Sam snapped. He rubbed his temples while the two super soldiers stood there looking ashamed.
“This is your fault,” Bucky mumbled.
“Babe,” Steve huffed, “just help me get this cleaned up.” Bucky took a step closer to Steve and wrapped his arms around him, kissing some sauce from his cheek.
“We’re gonna need a shower after this,” Bucky smirked.
“I mean that’s what we usually do when you’re a sticky mess,” Steve chuckled.
“Ew! Guys! I’m still in the room!” Sam ran from the kitchen and slammed his bedroom door to put some distance between him and the lovebirds.
Bucky and Steve stood in the middle of the room laughing until Bucky smeared more sauce onto Steve’s face.
“Oh, I’m gonna kill you, jerk.”
“I know you love me, punk.”
“Yeah, yeah I do.”

You felt all the air leave your lungs as you watched his knife jut into Natasha’s gut. Her body made a loud thud as she hit the floor. You screamed her name as you ran over to her side.
Dr. Dahmer had stabbed her.
All because you hadn’t seen the knife in his hand.
Dr. Peter Dahmer was a criminal scientist who had been running inhumane experiments to create an army incapable of disobeying orders.
It was brainwashing.
The mission was personal because Bucky had been brainwashed in a similar way, and you saw how much it effected him. It hurt to see one of the loves of your life in pain.
So, you were more in your head than usual.
And it made you miss the knife.
Then, Natasha had gotten stabbed.
It was your fault.
“Nat—hey hey, look at me!” you said, trying to keep her from closing her eyes. You applied pressure to her wound, still talking to her. She had all of your focus.
It was your fault she got stabbed, you couldn’t also cause her death.
“Stay with me.” You said, tying some cloth around her stomach. You felt the fear take over your body, your hands were shaking. “I’d say she was a pretty good distraction” Dahmer said, with an evil tone in his voice.
You looked up towards him, dreading what you would see. All you saw him do was press a giant red button.
There was a rumbling sound and saw flames appear. The explosion began to race down the hallway. You knew the explosion would let him escape, and also destroy all the evidence at his lab.
“Nat, we have to go!” you said, pulling her up to her feet. You wrapped your arm around her shoulder, heading towards the exit. You sprinted down the hallway, trying to outrun the explosion.
You could feel the blaze from behind you. The flames would reach you in a matter of seconds, and you were four floors up.
With adrenaline running through your veins, you made it out just as the building collapsed into flames.
You smashed through the window, jumping towards the ground. You pulled Natasha with you. You felt the impact as your body hit the ground, shielding Nat from hitting the ground.
You rolled her off of your body, knowing instantly that you had broken bones.
“Tony we need med evac. Nat got stabbed.” Your voice was rushed and you could hear the emotion in your own voice.
As you sat outside of the infirmary, you couldn’t focus on any of the chaos around you. You couldn’t even focus on your own thoughts.
You had the past hour replaying in your head, watching your stupid mistakes over and over again. You looked down at your blood-stained hands, knowing the blood would fade but not your memories. You would have those images burned into your brain forever.
Despite all the tragedy, you still hadn’t let yourself cry yet. You were like a bomb waiting to explode. As soon as you were alone, you would explode into a fiery ball of tears.
“Sweetie, come here.” you heard someone say. You finally looked up and saw Steve kneeling in front of your chair. You couldn’t look him in the eye, your gaze returning to your bloodied hands.
Your entire body ached after being bandaged up from your wounds.
Steve frowned as he watched the guilt written across your face. “Let’s get your cleaned up, honey.” he said, swooping you into his arms. You buried your face in his chest as he carried you away from all the people rushing around.
He got you to his room and set you down on his bed. You remained silent as he went to grab a wash cloth. Before you knew it, he was kneeling in front of you and took your hands into his.
He handed you your pain medication before washing your hands. He rubbed the warm cloth over your hands, cleaning off the blood. The gesture was so genuine and caring. All he wanted was to ease your mind.
“There you go, honey.” he said, pressing a kiss to your forehead. He left the room to put away the wash cloth. You pulled the blankets over your body and couldn’t stop the sobs that escaped you.
All of your emotions reached a breaking point. You couldn’t stop the tears.
As soon as Steve laid eyes on you, his heart broke for you. He pulled you into his lap, cradling your shaking body. “It’s okay, love.” he said, running his hands up and down your back.
The tears didn’t want to stop. “It’s my fault.” you mumbled into his chest. He knew you felt guilty, but he knew you weren’t to blame. He wiped the tears off of your cheeks. “You did what you were trained to do. You helped Nat when you saw that she was hurt. You did the right thing” he told you.
His words did little to calm you. “But as I helped her, I took my eyes off Dahmer. If I had watched him, he wouldn’t have been able to set off the explosion” you explained. He pressed a soft kiss to your lips, trying to at least distract you from your guilt.
“You saved her life.” He said, simply before kissing you again. You kissed him back and then buried your head in his chest. He hated seeing you upset.
“Let’s get you out of your tactical suit.” He told you, grabbing a sweater and sweatpants from his closet. He unzipped the tight suit, pulling it off your body. He pressed soft kisses to your lips before putting the other clothes on you.
You sat down on the bed and crawled under the blankets. “I’ll go get you some water, okay?” He said, kissing your forehead. You relaxed into the mattress.
Every time you tried to close your eyes, the flames flashed back into your mind. It was hard to relax when it was mind-numbingly terrifying to close your eyes.
You felt a pair of arms wrap around your waist, pulling you into their body. Someone’s lips attached themselves to your neck, giving gentle kisses.
You recognized Bucky’s cologne instantly. “Hi there, bug” he said, his voice soft and comforting. You rolled over to face him, balling his sweater up in your hands.
“No more tears” he said, placing kisses on both of your cheeks. A tiny smile snuck onto your face. Steve came back in the room, lying behind you on the bed. Both of them wrapped your arms around you, keeping you safe. They couldn’t make your guilt and anxiety magically disappear, but they would damn well try.
“Nat wanted to thank you for saving her life.” Steve told you, rubbing his hands up and down your back.
“I don’t deserve that,” you mumbled softly. You didn’t see either of them frown, but they did immediately. “You deserve the world, honey.” Steve said, nuzzling his face into your neck.
“You’re a hero,” Bucky added, kissing your forehead. Contently in their grasps, you finally were relaxed enough to fall asleep. They couldn’t help but feel in awe of you, as you peacefully fell asleep.
They hated seeing you being so hard on yourself. You needed to give yourself a break every now and then.
They both started to doze off slowly, until you jumped up out of bed screaming.
They both jumped away, assuming they had hurt you by bumping one of your injuries. They very quickly noticed the tears streaming down your cheeks. “I’m sorry, Nat” you mumbled, as you were startled from your nightmare.
“It’s just a nightmare, doll.” Bucky said, pulling you into a hug. You sobbed into his chest, the scarring images still fresh in your brain.
He held you until your breathing steadied and you stopped crying. As he pulled away, his hand grazed one of your broken ribs. You winced and pulled away.
It had been an immediate reaction, but it broke Bucky’s heart. To know that he caused you pain, sent daggers through his heart.
“I’ll get you an ice pack, honey” Bucky said, darting towards the kitchen. You frowned as you sat back down on your bed. You didn’t want Bucky or Steve to have to go out of their way for you.
“You guys don’t have to—” you began to say before Steve interrupted you. He shook his head while grabbing your hands. “Don’t even think about it, honey. You know we both love taking caring of you. You aren’t burdening anyone. You take care of us, so let us help you.” He said, sweetly.
Steve always knew how to make you swoon.
“Thank you,” you said, giving him a genuine smile. He returned your smile and pressed a light kiss to your lips. “Always, darling. How about you pick a movie and I get to cuddle by amazing girlfriend?” He suggested, lying beside you.
You couldn’t help but giggle at his charm. “That sounds like a great plan.” Bucky added, joining you both in bed. The three of you got positioned, them both making sure your ice packs stayed in place. “How did I get so lucky?” You asked, looking at your caring boyfriends.

You walked up to Steve’s bedroom door and heard bickering inside. You recognized the voices as Steve’s and Bucky's. You lightly knocked on the door. The bickering stopped instantly. “Who is it?” Steve called out.
“It’s me” you replied, waiting for their response. You heard shuffling in the room and the slamming of Steve’s closet before Bucky opened the door for you.
“Hey there, doll” Bucky said, pulling you into a kiss. You kissed him back, letting his arms pull you closer. You heard the door click behind you and felt Steve wrap his arms around you from behind. You smiled and enjoyed their touch. “What’s the special occasion? I’m getting so much attention from my boys” you asked, pulling away from them both and sitting down on Steve’s bed.
They both sat down next to you on the bed. “Your birthday, honey” Steve said. Bucky buried his face in your neck, slowly sucking on your sweet spot. A small whimper passed through your lips before you got ahold of yourself. “Come on, Buck. We have time for that later. My birthday isn’t until tomorrow. I was just coming to make sure you were packed for going to the cabin tonight” you told them both. Bucky moved his face, but interlaced his fingers with yours.
“We’re both packed; you don’t have to worry. Just because your birthday is tomorrow doesn’t mean we can’t make you special today too” Steve said, kissing your cheek.
“I love my boys so much” you said, beaming at them both. They treated you like a damn queen, and you loved them for it. They always knew how to make you feel special.
“So what were you guys doing before I came in?” You asked them, curiously. Both of their eyes went wide, and suddenly they both were silent. You assumed it was a birthday secret. You were smart enough to realize that they both became secretive around your birthday every year.
They both stared at each other, trying to non verbally come up with an excuse. “I get it. It’s a secret” you said, lying down on the bed and pulling them down with you.
“Your birthday is going to be amazing tomorrow. I’m going to make you a special breakfast in bed” Steve said, talking to you but staring at Bucky. You noticed some obvious tension between the two men. “Oh yeah? Well I’m going to take you on a special birthday picnic” Bucky shot back, glaring at Steve.
“I’ll love both of your gifts, but I just want to spend time with you both tomorrow. You both are the best presents I could ever receive” you said, looking at both of them. They both directed their attention back to you and off of each other.
You spent the rest of the day making sure that everything was packed. That night, Steve drove you both out to the cabin in the woods that you had rented.
When you got there, it was already dark. You ran excitedly into the cabin, with Steve and Bucky chuckling as they followed behind you.
“This place is amazing” you told them when they finally walked in the front door. They both loved the contagious smile on your face. “Glad you like it, sweetheart” Steve said, softly smiling at you. Bucky took the suitcases to the bedroom and set them down.
You noticed how sleepy they both were when Bucky returned to the room. “How about we get some rest?” You asked, looking at the bags under their eyes. They both slowly nodded their heads.
You led them both to your bedroom and crawled into bed. It only took a few minutes for them to fall asleep right next to you. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself. They had put so much effort into your birthday weekend that they were now exhausted.
You let yourself cuddle into them, looking forward to the morning and what it would bring.
When you finally opened your eyes, you reached out for either of your boyfriends. Your hands were met with cold sheets. Your eyes snapped open, looking at the empty bed.
“Those assholes won’t even cuddle with me on my birthday” you thought to yourself. You sat on the edge of the bed, stretching your tired limbs. You stood up after rubbing the sleep from your eyes.
Before you could leave the bedroom, they both rushed into the bedroom. “No no no, back to bed, miss birthday girl” Bucky said, swooping you up off your feet. You giggled as he threw you back into the bed. Steve stood behind him with a smirk on his face.
You noticed that his hands were behind his back. “Is that something for me?” You asked, raising your eyebrows at him. Steve chuckled before moving his hands in front of you and handed you a wrapped present.
“For me?” You asked, giggling giddily. You ripped open the wrapping paper and saw a black box. You could feel your excitement coursing through your veins. You took off the lid and saw a silver bracelet.
Your heart practically melted. The bracelet was gorgeous, and it was engraved with your’s, Steve’s, and Bucky’s initials. “Steve, it’s beautiful” you said, pulling him into a kiss. His hands rested on your waist, his soft lips slotting against yours.
“Wait! You haven’t seen my present yet” Bucky said, turning to the closet and pulling out a slightly bigger wrapped gift. You pulled away from Steve and accepted the gift. You noticed Bucky glaring at Steve as you opened it.
You wished they didn’t have to make everything a competition.
You tossed the wrapping paper to the side and saw the leather-bound book. Furrowing your eyebrows in confusion, you flipped over the book. It read: “Our Story”
You felt the goosebumps trail up your body as you flipped through the pages. It was a scrapbook of your entire relationship, filled with fun pictures of the three of you.
“Bucky” you awed, tears welling up in your eyes. You cupped his face and pulled him into a kiss. His fingers toyed with the hem of your sweater as he kissed you.
Then, the moment was ruined.
“Well I have another present for you” Steve said, interrupting. You pulled away from Bucky to look at Steve with frustration. Then, Bucky challenged him. “So do I” he said, crossing his arms and looking over at Steve.
They both started bickering back and forth. You grew annoyed.
It was your birthday, and all they could focus on was outdoing each other. You appreciated that they put effort into your gifts, but this was too far. “Enough” you yelled, shutting them both up.
They looked at you with guilty expressions on their faces. They both realized that they had messed up. “It’s my birthday. I already told you that I don’t care about the presents. I just wanted to spend time with you both, but you two can’t stop competing with each other” you said, crossing your arms. Their eyes softened as they realized how upset you were.
They were both at your side in a matter of seconds. “I’m sorry that we got so caught up in your gifts. We just wanted you to have an amazing birthday” Steve said, pecking your cheek. Bucky did the same and pulled you into a hug.
You laid down on the bed and beckoned them towards you. They both laid beside you. Steve’s arm was thrown over your stomach, and Bucky interlaced his fingers with yours.
“Now, this is what I’ve been looking forward to” you said, snuggling into their touch. As they both looked down at you with a pure smile on your face, they realized that they had forgotten the whole point of this weekend: making you feel special.
