Glisten’s new national survey finds two-thirds of queer and trans youth feel unsafe at school, and most say the grown-ups around them aren’t

A new national survey of LGBTQ+ students finds most feel unsafe at school, with advocates warning that a mix of political pressure, inconsistent policies, and inaction by adults is reshaping classrooms across the country. The findings, released Tuesday and previewed last week at the National Education Association headquarters in Washington, D.C., come from the newly rebranded GLSEN, now known as Glisten, and its 2025 National School Climate Survey. Based on responses from 2,800 students, the report shows that nearly two-thirds of LGBTQ+ youth feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Only one in three said they regularly look forward to going to school. The survey also found that 86 percent of transgender and gender-expansive students avoided certain spaces at school, and 62 percent experienced harassment or assault tied to their sexual orientation.

[...] Advocates say the climate is shaped not only by harassment but by what they describe as a lack of response. Willingham-Jaggers pointed to what they call “negative neutrality,” where schools avoid addressing LGBTQ+ issues even when policies exist. “There’s a deafening silence,” they said, describing environments where students see rules on paper but little enforcement in practice.

The survey found that more than half of LGBTQ+ students reported discrimination at school, including being prevented from using facilities that align with their gender identity, while the majority experienced harassment tied to their identity. Nearly half of LGBTQ+ students of color also reported harassment based on race or ethnicity.

A 2025 report from Glisten (formerly GLSEN) reveals that 2/3rds of LGBTQ+ and trans youth feel unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Out-ing Minority Students to Their Abusers - Safeguards needed in HB 382

I am writing to express my profound concerns regarding the proposed HB 382 legislation: Out-ing Minority Students to Their Abusers, which aims to involve parents in the education process but may inadvertently expose vulnerable LGBTQ+ students, and others, to harmful environments. As any survivor of domestic violence is acutely aware; ensuring the safety and well-being of all students is paramount, especially those from marginalized communities. While I acknowledge the intention behind HB 382, it is crucial to consider the potential for misuse of this legislation, which would further exacerbate the already high rates of harm and mortality among LGBTQ+ youth. Therefore, I call you to incorporate additional safeguards into the bill to protect the privacy and safety of these students, or alternatively, reject the bill entirely to rework it with the safety of ALL students prioritized. Specifically, measures must be implemented to ensure that information about a student's gender identity and romantic interests is not disclosed without their explicit consent to anyone. The goal of our education system should be to foster an inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their personal demographics. By prioritizing the privacy and safety of vulnerable students, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, thrive, and grow without fear of discrimination or harm. I urge you to consider these concerns and take action to protect the rights of students in Alaska. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Protect the privacy of all students! The university is doing even worse after offering protective services for students afraid for their safety. Initially they said *all* students could report their situation to police and safety, but later rescinded that to say they wouldn't protect students from undocumented reporting agencies (basically they'll turn students over to ICE or other orgs if they report to P&S they feel unsafe)

Which is fucking worse than dragging their feet on offering this in the first place. Leading students who are minorities have been given public harassment and threats and all sorts of shit, and the school can't even guarantee their safety if they even suspect you're undocumented.

UNIVERSITIES, DEFEND YOUR STUDENTS against Trump’s anti-Palestinian agenda instead of obeying his fascist policies!

Palestine Legal Director Dima Khalidi argues in the @nationmag that universities’ complete surrender to Trump’s threats and ever-harsher crackdowns on the student movement “will not release them from the administration’s crosshairs. (Columbia has learned that lesson 400 million times over).”

Instead, their compliance has helped turn students into prime targets for fascist government repression.

We saw a key example of this with the illegal abduction and detention of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, who was on Trump’s radar and whom Columbia had already made an example of , putting him through ever-more draconian disciplinary processes long before he was abducted. Pro-Israel groups also publicly urged Trump officials to target him. Columbia knew Khalil was under threat; just a day before his abduction, Khalil himself had told the university that he feared that “ICE or a dangerous individual might come to my home.”

 

In Dima’s op-ed, she lays out four fundamental shifts that universities must make to fight for the rights and freedoms of the students and faculty who make their campuses vibrant, diverse places to imagine and build a just and viable future.
