so your last semester wasn’t great, part ii.
so a week or so ago i made this post about how to start off a semester after your grades have taken a hit. and a lot of you seemed to like it and need it! but admittedly a lot of that advice – like not being afraid to drop a class that you think would be better taken at another time, or limiting other activities, is really only useful the first week or so. and around this time, a lot of us start feeling unmotivated again, wanna skip class and sleep in, and start losing track of assignments. so here’s part two, to help out both you and me!
1. re-evaluate your organization.
Remember in the last post, where I said to try something new? Really seriously evaluate if it’s working for you - if it’s not, would something else work better? or is the method you’re currently using fine, and you just need to put more effort into keeping it updated! (@ me with my current planner.)
2. devise rewards for going to class.
I have a 9am religion course that requires a one-page paper EVERY. SINGLE. CLASS. you literally cannot get attendance for the day if you don’t have the paper. it’s a tough class especially for someone like me, for whom regular homework is like hell on earth. so my reward is, when I go to class, I get to go to starbucks. NO STARBUCKS if I don’t go to class. (but Greyson, you say! Can’t you just go to Starbucks anyway? Yes, my child, I can, but work with me here. Some discipline is required.)
3. watch your schedule for bad habits forming.
with a new class schedule and new free times, you tend to develop a routine. i have a 6-hour break between my two classes on monday, wednesday, and friday, and so far I haven’t been very productive with that break. my day starts with a 9am, I just want to go back to my room and sleep! instead, what I can do is take my laptop with me and walk to the library afterward so I’m forced to get some work done.
4. know when to take a break!
you know what I said about not skipping class? well, there are some exceptions. For example, if you’re sick – don’t make the mistake of trying to keep doing everything, because you’ll only be sick for longer and end up missing more. and, let’s be frank, you’re an adult. if you’re having an absolutely shit day, you need the time to study for another class or complete another assignment, then don’t beat yourself up for skipping one class or taking a day off. just MAKE SURE you communicate with your professors and do makeup assignments as needed. Avoid burnout, but do it responsibly.
Hope this was helpful, guys. keep up the hard work!
