The proof of concept finally released from the one piece mold. Now to make a 2 piece mold to make the process a little faster. I have been enjoying exploring this pressmold surface. I also plan to slip cast some of these too. I’m currently processing my clay body into a casting slip. May even get to test that today and see how it performs. I’m using the technique from Paul Wandless’s article in ceramics monthly. It’s not live it’s memorex. I’m still making the styrofoam cups, oh the time it takes. I decided before sending these things in for a bisque fire I would toss on some yellow, try and save myself a step later. I think I did a pretty good job with @amacobrent intense yellow as a close match to @tacosombrero.official yellow. Now to work up some stencils and underglaze transfers for the next step. Who knew so much work goes into making a styrofoam cup? I mean how can these things be so cheap and disposable? 🤔 Maybe we wouldn’t be such a disposable society if we had to make our own styrofoam cup. I make things to build relationships, it’s the core of all artists in my opinion. It could be a relationship with the work created by viewing and enjoying, it could be a relationship created between people when it is gifted, the relationship between artist and buyer, the relationships formed over a cup of coffee in a hand made mug. And relationships should not be disposable. I often get asked by my students on how to get inspired. Generally I respond with “inspiration is for amateurs the rest of us get down to work” chuck close or “inspiration knocks while your working” Picasso. I’m sure I butcher those actual quotes but the premise is to get them to just make art. The truth is when you are making art inspiration is all around. I’ve been throwing tumblers and trying to come up with a form that I love. So far I had come up with one that I liked but really didn’t love. That is until today. A trip to my favorite local taco joint during teacher workdays resulted in taking home this styrofoam cup and I had some inspiration. Fast forward 4 weeks and I finally turned a lump of clay into my new tumbler form. Eureka I exclaimed, actually I sat back gave a full belly laugh and then snapped this picture. So to all my students past and present, inspiration is all around just keep working and stay open minded. It will happen.
