Iolite early formation (bottom) and new (top).
Changed for the better.
A re-draw of my very first fan gems Flourite and Carborundum then (era 1) and now (era 3) in honor of the series finale of the show that has had such a positive influence on so many of us.
*Trigger warning*: What follows is a heart felt personal story with mention of suicide. Please do not proceed with reading if this makes you uncomfortable. There is a happy ending though.
For myself personally this show was a way for me to connect with my sister who’s life long struggle with severe mental illness made making a positive connection difficult (not for lack of trying I might add). After a particularly hard few years I almost lost her on three separate occasions. The memories I have from those times finding her and frantically getting her to hospital haunted me and made picturing a bright future for her painful and nearly impossible to imagine. She shut out so many of us and held resentment for me for being the one who wouldn't let her go. I felt the need to fight for her life when she could not which to her at the time, and through the lens of mental illness, just came across as me bring aggressive and unfair.
She went without talking to me for a long time. After some time in recovery however she began to open up again little by little to those around her. I was the last on the long list but patiently awaited the day she would feel okay around me again.
Then one day I heard her laughing from another room. I cannot tell you how quickly tears came to my eyes. I peaked in to try and see what was making her so happy, a cartoon of happy chubby boy with a pink dot on his stomach. Immediately I searched for what it was and so my love of Steven Universe was born.
We started talking again. We started laughing together again. It became the bridge between us. The lessons it taught of self acceptance and growth, of recognizing your differences and celebrating them instead of being ashamed helped her see some value in herself again. The queer inclusion made me feel more accepted. Knowing it’s creator worked together with her own sibling to create something so positive and moving while still being able to reach audiences beyond its target demographic only added to my adoration of it.
To this day she still struggles, I still struggle, but now we do it as a team, together. Now we can laugh together, now I can picture her future more clearly. Now she is able to let herself grow.
I just wanted to say a proper thank you to Rebecca Sugar and all of the @crewniverse for helping me build that bridge.
Forever grateful and forever changed (for the better)

I couldn’t help myself. `__>__`
A fusion character I made for @su-revived‘s contest I missed because I ended up working extra shifts. -_>-
But I love them all and still want to share them. ^_>^ Iolite is a fusion of a Lilac sapphire and a Blue Hemimorphite. They would have been part of the rebellion if they where around for it. (Her forms a bit exaggerated as I was trying a new style.)
My entry for @boringartist fusion contest. Congrats on 5000+ followers. ^_>_^
So the gem fusion on top is my official entry and the second one is just a bonus I did for fun (is was so hard to choose just one to try).
Fusion one: Water Opal! A fusion of 2 of @boringartist ‘s gems (Rose pearl and Green Sapphire ) and my Aquamarine.
Water opal is an unlikely fusion between a high class gem, a rebel and a home-world loyalist. She/ they has the appearance similar to that of a mythic seraph angle thanks to her wigs and many eyes. Like the opal of amethyst and pearl she has extreme inner peace, unlike their opal she has a very sharp clarity of mind thanks to the balance of her components. Her sapphire eye looks into the future and past of the gem before her, her aquamarine eyes represent her analytic mind and her pearl eyes make moral judgment. She is the prefect fusion to deliver balanced justice. She is a giant compared to other gems and uses the scythe of her Rose pearl component. Like the giant computer “deep thought” from Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy Water opal would most likely spend most of her time meditating still on one question, long enough for vines to grow on her and the passing civilizations to think she is but a statue of an old god.
Edit: *My hand slipped*
Bonus fusion: Bi-colour tourmaline, a fusion of @boringartist ‘s colour shift sapphire and my Orange Kyanite.
Fun facts: Bi tourmaline makes for an excellent navigator thanks to one of her components being a pilot and one having future vision. She has the classy but adventurous attitude. She is also very adept at finding lost things (treasure, the lost city of Atlantis etc) She would most likely end up getting involved with space pirates at some point in her existence.
Well that was fun ^_>^. Can’t wait to see more entries! Good luck everyone.
My terrible “comic” on Coco Pearl’s (Honey Yellow pearl and Sable pearl) story. ;_>_; Why can’t I draw as nicely as the images in my head.
Who needs real hands and arms anyway. If you’ve ever felt bad about your art skills refer to this.
Fusion dump. `__>`
I had a stressful week so I decided to draw some of my most recent fusions again ^_>^.
First one is a triple gem fusion that go’s by Labradorite. Shes an excellent ballroom dancer, is confident, has magical girl vibes and is generally just happy she get’s to exist.
Next is Rainbow Scapolite a double gem fusion of an Ammolite and a Cat’s Eye Tourmaline. Shes a smarty pants, hates forced fusion and lives in secret.
Finally Iolite a double gem fusion of a Lilac Sapphire and a Blue Hemimorphite (you can’t see the gems as they’re on her other side) that joined the rebellion to be together. She rarely exposes her eyes as most of the time they are covered by her hair.
Photo dump because I design gems when I’m stressed. *___>_*
