Worst character death, for Undertale >:3
Like I mean they’re all pretty bad. I recently tried a neutral run where I killed Undyne ‘cause I was trying to build up to a Geno run and that was rough. Her neutral run death is absolutely heartbreaking and hard to go through ‘cause she still has her DT, but in the neutral run....she doesn’t transform. She just....she just slowly melts and dies as you give her the final blow over and over and over again. I legit nearly RESET after that ‘cause I felt so guilty.
But PAPYRUS OH MY GOD. I know I just talked about how horrible Undyne’s death is and like...how could Papyrus ever top that? And, quite frankly, in a neutral run? I don’t know. I don’t know because I haven’t been able to attempt Papyrus yet. I’ve killed Mettaton, I’ve killed Undyne, I’ve even killed Toriel. I cannot, for the life of me, kill Papyrus. I’m literally procrastinating on my next run ‘cause it’s the run I plan on killing him.
And it’s cause.... Papyrus is just... He’s not extremely naive (a lil sure but I think he’s less so than he let’s on), and while I don’t know if he remembers RESETS or not outside of the usual deja vu or know they are happening, he’s just... He’s so kind? And his philosophy and way of life is just... He wants to believe anyone can change, even if they’re a terrible person. To the point where he risks his life in the Geno run by not even FIGHTing you at all. Just SPARING. And god... everyone else. Everyone else you can die to. Even Toriel.
But Papyrus? I believe it’s impossible to be killed by him in-game. Correct me if I’m wrong. But I do know that, once you’re down to 1 HP, he ends the FIGHT immediately.
He doesn’t want to kill anyone. He doesn’t even really want to capture you. He just wants friends and validation because -- as confident as he projects himself -- he does have all these insecurities and is lonely and either is blind to Undyne’s friendship or feels that her and Sans’ care and love for him are just not enough.
Undyne? Legitimately wants you dead. Same with Mettaton. Asgore doesn’t want it but, despite his grief over it, will kill you anyways. Even destroying your SPARE button in the process. Toriel doesn’t want to kill you but she doesn’t make it easy for you to SPARE her either and trapping a kid in the RUINS with a stranger is kinda...yknow? She has no ill will and just wants to help you because she knows if she doesn’t you’ll die... But a child isn’t going to understand that.
And while beating you until an inch of your life really isn’t... I mean it’s not good by any stretch of the means in of itself. But it speaks volumes when he’s the only boss that like...won’t and can’t kill you. And after he even tries to help you as best as he can and as earnestly as he can. He’s like the most genuine character in the game, which is ironic considering he was potentially raised by one of the least genuine character in the game.
(I love Sans, but I’m calling him out. The guy is like never completely honest. And when he is it’s either about Papyrus or he goes and obscures his honesty with lies or tricks. Like seriously, we all know he ain’t talking about an echo flower in that one convo. And I find it hard to believe that he’s “rootin’ for ya” right after threatening your life but also in neutral runs when you kill someone. Like he doesn’t even show up in his Hotland station if you kill Undyne, but he’s right in MTT resort ready to be pals? Ain’t buying it.)
But yeah, again Papyrus doesn’t even FIGHT you in Geno run. So like... yeah.
His death is like the worst to me. (Fuck it man: I can read angst and whump fics about nearly every character in Undertale, but the minute it’s Papyrus I have the hardest time reading it. Like there’s this really one popular one that I just... I can’t even try because I can’t stand the thought or idea of Papyrus growing as nihilistic as Sans is...)
