Hello, there and welcome to another blog post! 🙂
I saw this post on Melanie‘s blog and I thought this was such a great idea – a summer marathon! I was created by Amy, and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to read more if I challenge myself? Maybe get out of this reading slump? Let’s see 🙂

A hurricane is coming my way so no time like the present to start posting again.
So. CRE. What I wanted from this game the first time I ever played it was more of an emphasis on the creepy factor. This is only more true playing it as an adult. There are so many good stories and legends that belong to Hawaiian culture, and I really feel like "Kane Okala” and the way the story was handled in the game, was such a missed opportunity to introduce the idea of legends that are specific to other cultures. Because, even though I’m relatively sure Kane Okala himself is made up for the game, I really feel like the ghost stories or legends we choose to tell say a lot about the various cultures they come from. What different cultures value, what different cultures believe, etc. I think this is explored a little bit in games like SAW, too. The legend of Kane Okala is barely brought up though, and we’re never really given a reason to feel like it’s a plausible explanation for the things that are going on around the island. Honestly, it’s really easy to forget that’s even a thing. Like in CUR for example, there are all of these “ghostly” things that contribute to us feeling uneasy and like maybe there are at least some things happening that defy explanation. In SAW it’s the same deal where we aren’t so much directly confronted with something so much as it’s really about what the other characters believe and why and Nancy coming up against that as an outsider in a literal and cultural way if that makes sense. Sure there’s the opportunity to learn more about Hawaii and the people at Big Island Mike’s but I don’t think anyone loves earning Big Island Bucks enough to spend money on every single article on that machine. I just feel like things about beliefs and the culture could have been better integrated into the game. I feel like the game in general is pretty boring because it just ends up boiling down to bugs and plants and collecting shells and shit without this creepy undercurrent. Where I WILL give the game a ton of credit is the way it addresses, on a very basic level, the struggle of native Hawaiians where it comes to tourism, the pineapple crop, etc. That will probably get its own post because I don’t think most people know much of anything about how negatively these things impact the islands and the historical context here, and I think it’s really cool that HeR at least went there a little bit. But now I’ve gotta go cry over Fox and Geese and resent everything about ICE generally. Because honestly, the thing I’m most bitter about is this creepy game drought, because CRE doesn’t come through.
I'm going to go ahead and assume that the reason Frank and Joe have the same backpack in the inventory bar is definitely because they still do that thing where they dress the same because their mom makes them. Definitely not because HeR just didn't recolor it. Clearly.
I really wish CRE was more like Creature from the Black Lagoon and less like what it actually is. That’s what I signed up for when I saw the trailer for the first time at the end of DAN, and I continue to be a little bitter I didn’t get it.
I’m probably going to write a big post about this, but even though I know who the culprit is in CRE, everyone else is kind of seeming like the asshole rn.
I’m going to level with everyone, the frass puzzle isn’t even hard but it just seems so annoyingly time consuming to me that I’m considering just cheating it anyway.
AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SHAVE ICE TOO?? ARE YOU FUCKING FOR REAL??
