July 21: “Uncle Chaim And Aunt Rifke And The Angel” by Peter S. Beagle
I’m participating in #oneshortmonth, hosted by @armormadeofbooks!
Thoughts before reading: I've read this short story before, although I can’t remember where at the moment.
Favorite Quote:(s)
“The blue angel spread her splendid, shimmering wings one last time, filling the studio—as, for a moment, the mean winter sky outside seemed to flare with a sunset hope that could not have been. Then she and Manassa, the dybbuk, were gone, vanished instantly, which makes me think that the wings aren't really for flying. I don't know what other purpose they could serve, except they did seem somehow to enfold us all and hold us close. But maybe they're just really decorative. I'll never know now.”
Rating: 5/5
What did you like: I’ve read this story before, and I adore it. So much about it is lovely, and Beagle’s writing is brilliant as ever. The ending especially—the connection with our main character—is stunning.
What did you dislike: Maybe length? It’s a long one.
Would you read more by this author: Yes. I’ve read both Summerlong and The Last Unicorn by him as well, and his writing is excellent.
Peter s. Beagle I am not okay with the ending of Summerlong i was not prepared to cry before my psychiatrist appointment, also major open ending. This book is truly touching but also totally heartbreaking. Why does every book have to deal with coping with loss and change in such a real and beautiful way. You are just such an amazing author who helps in so many ways when it's needed in life. I'm so excited for the last unicorn sequel coming out in October. Hopefully going to try and write a review on Tumblr about this book. Oh will I be able to move on from such a good book I don't know. #lastunicorn #petersbeagle #summerlong #thelastunicorn #petersoyerbeagle
So the short of this is this - Peter S Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn, and a bunch of other amazing books, is in a bad place financially right now. I can’t find any other thread on tumblr right now so I thought it’d start spreading the word.
DM Adrienneleigh on Twitter to donate directly to his Paypal
Website where you can donate to his legal fund
unicorn themed humble book bundle that’s also a good option
twitter thread outlining his recent legal troubles
also buying (and reviewing) his new books, Summerlong and In Calabria, is helpful, though in a more long range way. For those that haven’t clicked that twitter thread link - AVOID CONLAN PRESS and ANYTHING with Connor Cochran’s name on it. At best the money will be tied up in legal stuff for years. Vet which social media accounts you link as well as. Unfortunately I don’t believe there is current a way to buy The Last Unicorn(book or movie) that benefits him(I would dearly love to be corrected if that is incorrect.)
