Okay, listen! It was the Spring Tournament. Her high school had made it to Nationals. She was a backup libero, no way would she would be start—oh, okay, turns out Shizuka-senpai twisted her ankle just after the first game. Great! She, of course, texts her dads furiously about it.

Round Two is when the seeded teams drop into the bracket. But what are the odds that they—

Kuzu stares at the posted list with mounting horror and panic.

It’s only round two, and they are up against Niiyama, the top high school girls’ team in the country.

What are the fucking odds?!

She texts Rin about this. She texts Uncle Osamu. She even texts Uncle Omi, though she knows he’s probably busy with the twins.

Why are we playing Niiyama already?!

This is it. The end of her volleyball career. She’s a first-year reserve libero up against the top girls in the nation, she’s going to mess up so royally and publicly that everyone’s going to forget even that one time that Rin degloved his hand.

Okay, maybe she was getting a little worked up about this.

She takes a seat in the hall and slowly counts on her fingers. Five things you can see. Four you can feel. Three you can hear. Two you can smell. One—she takes a sip of Pocari—you can taste.

Listen up, buttercup, you’re not a Komori for nothing, she tells herself sternly. You will get out there and make your dads proud and absolutely crush it!!

Still, she ducks a hand into her bag and fishes out a familiar hairclip with a yellow bow. It gets pinned into her ponytail holder, so it won’t fly off mid-match. There. Now she’s ready.
