There was an idea that ought to be had, at times, of secrecy as a matter of protection.

What you don’t know can’t hurt you- it isn’t the most intuitive philosophy. Those who lived and died in Pompeii were hurt, after all. Despite, and because, they did not know what humanity might now tell you about volcanoes such at Mount Vesuvius. Still, it remained- secrecy pretending to be some key to a peaceful life.

At first, that remnant still hung in the air of Rhizome-9. A thought that went both ways, somehow. That Diana would be protecting this man she was getting to know better by keeping her past to herself. That Sigma was protecting this woman he’d loved a thousand times before by keeping parts of the truth- of the other timelines- to himself. 

But between people who had met a hundred times and still, had never met? That protection wasn’t something so important as to overcome the need to know and be known. So it was that Diana, eventually, on Rhizome Nine- Told Sigma these things which he couldn’t possibly know, and that he had always known. And once that condition had been met- The conversation which he would, in another time, use to prove how much he knew her? The gate was lifted on their genuine comprehension of each other.

And on their memories. 

Following their escape from DCOM, things had become fuzzy. Leaving behind that morphogenetic field turned only their current timeline clear- But upon having that eternal conversation, it seemed, all those other worlds were made known to them once more. Chief among those worlds, the one where they had really. Absolutely. Fallen in the love.

Living together and dying together. And in that memory, that recollection which was so awful and so wonderful all at once… The only reply to such a thing was to mourn. To mourn together, in each other’s arms. For their own lost lives in that time. For the children they were without. For the fact that…

Even as they sat together at peace with the  way things had turned out? This was, to some other version of themselves… Another time to mourn. Another timeline lost. Another in a long, long line… Of times they loved and lost each other, one way or another.
