The Curious Case of Masayo Kakihara and MKW Animation Studio

The other day on tumblr I became aware of an instance where one Masayo Kakihara of MKW Animation had a portfolio on their website containing stolen art. Looking further into it they were advertising their service as a designer and animator on facebook with stolen art as well. They had claims they were involved with works like The Wind Rises and Ronia the Robber's Daughter by Ghibli as well as other anime works like Akatsuki no Yona. They had an article on Wikipedia which was swiftly removed due to lack of citations. On Oveemo.com there is claim of an article on Anime News Network entitled "Cowboy Bebop Helmer Shinichiro Watanabe, MKW Animation Studio Plan New TV Anime" of which I can find no proof ever was a real article. Next we have the curious fact that even after they claimed that all the stolen art was removed from their websites the day before, on January 16 they still had stolen art up on the perseverance.in/masayo website. And looking up the domain information on both sites I found something rather curious. Here's some information found on the mkwanimation.com website compared to the registration information on the perseverance.in website. However, despite the address for mkwanimation.com being clearly Japanese it still is associated with that number from India. The phone numbers to contact MKW Animation are 880 numbers, associated with Bangladesh.  Additionally, when I use Google Maps to look up the location of the Bangladesh branch it brings me to the middle of nowhere. Then there's the fact that the address on the mkwanimation.com website is the address of Waseda University. While according to Masayo Kakihara's facebook information she went there, her time there supposedly ended in 2010. Mkwanimation.com was registered on December 29 in 2014. Someone who wishes to remain unnamed confirms that site also use to be on their website until it was changed shortly after Masayo Kakaihara attempted to use deviantArt to hire people to work for her. They added that looking at Google Street view the new address looks to be apartments.  While the registry phone number could be the result of using a third party to register and host their domain everything else is still a bit fishy at the latest. Add in the fact some of their “customer reviews” are rather fishy in and of themselves and it looks more and more shady every moment. For example, they have a review from December of last year on their perseverance.in site by Ivo Caprino. A google search brings up a Norwegian filmmaker who did a lot of work with puppet animation who died in 2001 when searching that name. Also there is a comment from Les Clark, the name of one of the Nine Old Men of Disney Animation, who died in 1979. You also have an English language comment by Hayao Miyazaki. On mkwanimation.com you got an English language comment from Ghibli and an animation producer and animator who works there as well as another one from the mangaka who created Akatsuki no Yona and Brain's Base as well as ones by Hayao Miyazaki and the late Ivo Caprino and Les Clark.

And let's look at the fact that while telling your web designer to put test images from google into your portfolio is still a questionable move it it is still within the realm of plausibility there is no rational explanation for her using some of that same stolen art to advertise her services on facebook as well. That alone makes her claim about it being a mistake more questionable. Make a mistake in one place? Sure. Two places? Maybe. Three places? Something is obviously fishy. And she had the stolen art on both her sites and her facebook presenting them as the product of her studio.  In short, I really don't buy this “Masayo Kakihara's” honesty here. Especially when you take in how seriously accusations of copyright infringement and plagiarism can be taken in Japan. I do believe they very well may happen to be a scam artist and that people should be very wary of anything they claim. Relevant links:
