In case anyone was wondering how my sword making is going...the first printout, when I glued it together warped a bit, so I needed to change up what I was doing. Reprinted a whole new set (and made sure all parts had 100% flat bottoms this time)

I print in ABS because then I can make a little plastic slurry using leftover 3D print parts mixed with acetone to make a glue that holds incredibly well on the pieces.

I then glued each half together, let that dry, got a new dowel rod (smaller than the previous one, which is what I think partially caused the issue.) I let it sit for like a day and then sat to glue the two together. The gems are not glued in yet, I still have to "finish" those so they shine right.

This time around I got a package of clamps from the local hardware store, and used as many as I could to get the sword to flatten against itself, and have no gaps.

Let's cross our fingers and hope this one comes out better!

This sword I drew for my protagonist

I don't think I've posted this yet so...

This is the sword I designed for the protagonist of my AmRev series! It's probably impossible to read the text, so I'm going to copy it here.

Sword name: Esperanza

Constructed in: Toledo, Spain; 1697-1698

Full length: 36-38 in.

Jewels: 15 emeralds from North Carolina

Cut: Cabochon

Setting: Bezel, green velvet backing

Metal: Fire-gilt steel

Pommel: Disk, 2 emeralds (largest)

Grip: Hickory, gold wire wrap

Knuckle bow: Roughly rectangular, 3 emeralds

Pas d'ane: Viable for use, ¾ in. in diameter

Guard: Crossguard+double shell guard, 5 emeralds in each shell

Blade length: 28-30 in.

Style: Colichemarde

Fuller: Through forte, ends as blade narrows, continues through central ridge

Edge and point: Viable for both cutting and thrusting

Because I have some really freaking awesome uncles, I will have the massive privilege of being able to make Esperanza with my own hands! And since one of them lives in North Carolina, I might get some lore-accurate emeralds!!!!!

I do keep debating with myself if I want to dress up the scabbard a little more. Some inlay or something, but, at least for now I think I can wrap up this update.

Why are there fewer old European than Japanese swords?

Fun fact from comments: The end of the samurai (~1860's) was at the same time of the Civil War (1861-1865).

Cowboys and Samurai are of the same era, and stereotypical pirates aren't too much older. We still have Samurai swords because the era ended fairly recently as well as the reasons the video points out."

A marking substance (Charcoal, ink)

How to Carve your sword:

Clamp the plank to the table firmly, so it is horizontal.

Place the guide upon the plank

Marl out the area under the guide

With the saw, begin the carve out the shape marked by the ink, carving away from you.

Once fully carved, file the handle and crossguard to round them out.

File the blade edge to point, depending on which type of sword you desire.

Bind the leather wraps around the handle

Chisel method: (Better for details, but requires smooth wood)

Hard oak or beech plank

Leather for the handle

Sword or sharp knife

Clamp (Not necessary but helpful)

A marking substance (Charcoal, ink)

How to Carve your sword:

Clamp the plank to the table firmly vertically

Place the guide upon the plank

Mark out the area under the guide

With the saw, carve down the wood to the guide at each change of width or every 2 inches, whatever comes first

Chisel the wood, starting from the hilt and working your way up. Angles should be carved last.

File the handle and crossguard to round them out

File the blade edge to point, depending on which type of sword you desire.

Bind the leather wraps around the handle, and knot tightly. Can also be attached by drilling a small hole through the hilt, and stitching the leather together, before looping it through the hole and tying it firmly.

WHERE did Medieval Swords COME FROM?

Where did medieval swords usually come from? If we trust movies and games, they often came 'from the blacksmith'. But this is a gross misunderstanding of medieval society, industry and technology. 

As in “who made them?” Sword making was an industry with a number of specialist craftsmen responsible for making different components (blades, hilts, grips, scabbards, etc.).
