SYDNEY WHITE 2007 | dir. Joe Nussbaum
You know what era of romcoms I miss? It's the early 2000s teen romcoms that were based on classic literature. They were some of my favorite ones, and yeah, some were loosley based, but they still hit those important bases, and they were so much fun.
We had:
Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew - 10 Things I Hate About You
Shakespeare's 12th Night - She's the Man
Snow White - Sydney White
Cinderella - A Cinderella Story, What a Girl Wants
Little Mermaid - Aquamarine
Jane Austen's Emma - Clueless
The Scarlett Letter - Easy A
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet - Warm Bodies
Shakespeare's Midnight Summer's Dream - Get Over It
Pygmalion - She's All That
Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor - John Tucker Must Die
Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility - Material Girls
I might be missing some, but I remember just having fun with these. One of my English teachers also showed us a few of these movies while studying Shakespeare to show how pieces of literature can change over the years and inspire other's own takes.
The Genre of Old Stories (including Fairytales) set in The 20-21th Century of Modern Times Living in Our World.
Snow White’s family 🍎
Queen Snow White & King Florian Charming
Their daughters;
Sydney Antonella White, heir to the Charmington throne, excellent with a bow, an avid animal lover, social activist and not your usual princess. Tends to stick to herself and a close knit group of friends, most of them being the children of the seven dwarves. She went to school with the #fourcore and never really had an issue with VKs, as she understood what it’s like to be socially ostracized by her peers. Her best friends are Piper Pinocchio, Doug Dopey, Shy Bashful, Crabby Grumpy, Py Happy, Docson, Sleepy Jr & Gus Sneezy.
I could see her attempting to befriend Evie but being a bit shy about it, until the two would eventually find common ground with Evie trying to convince her to let her change her style and have a makeover!
Fiona Apple White, second oldest and essentially my adaptation of Apple White if you couldn’t peep that by her name lol. She’s spoiled, but I wouldn’t say rotten. She’s the epitome of an AK, dedicated to her craft even if that craft is being perfect at all times. She loves luxury and still shares her mother’s values—not to mention being the middle child absolutely gets to her head. All things considered, it’s definitely a better fate for this little apple, as without the added pressure of a fake destiny she has a lot of time freed for pursuing passions she’s actually interested in. She’s a year younger than the #fourcore and was a freshman when they arrived, struggling initially unlike her older sister, but she ended up coming around. Her best friends are Ally Wonderland & Ruby Fitzherbert.
Emma Swan White, youngest daughter and of course my adaptation of Emma Swan. She’s within the age range of Red & Chloe and the absolute baby of the family. Definitely the chiller out of the three sisters, used to doing her own thing and not a huge fan of the cameras. A world where she just gets to be a princess and have fun adventures without having to save the world… though she does that have capability, one way or another… She’s heard all sorts of things about VKs from her older sisters but she’s only now enrolling into Auradon. She’ll definitely be befriending Pink of Hearts, and Chloe’s her cousin so that’s a given. She might grow interest to a particular VK… 👀
Shidknee: Miss these gits. Here we are in the cheapest pub in all of Liverpool looking like absolute outcasts next to the workers #gothsquad
The Evil Queen on Film and TV
i present to you concepts for modern vlog-style LIWs that were never done (as far as i know) that absolutely nobody asked for. enjoy
the outsiders: high schoolers ponyboy and cherry (friends but in opposing social groups, the greasers vs the socials) tell the events of the story through their own youtube channels.
rapunzel (but sapphic): rapunzel, a lonely homeschooled teenage girl with strict parents and little contact with the outside world, meets a rebellious girl on the run, who helps her escape and learn about herself and the world.
beauty and the beast (but sapphic): fresh out of high school and excited to leave behind her small, narrow-minded town, izzie documents the start of her college adventures. when her impulsive brother maurice is sucked into an underground campus gambling ring and held hostage at the oldest, most secretive frat house until he can pay off his debts, izzie offers to take his place indefinitely. she meets the cruel, selfish, and hot-headed leader and owner of the house, addie, who has a dark past. unbeknownst to izzie, addie has lost a bet, and must learn to genuinely care about another and get someone to care about her in return.
hansel and gretel: twins hansel and gretel are placed into a new foster home after their deadbeat addict parents abandon them, but their foster mom has secrets of her own.
snow white: basically the webseries version of sydney white.
There are other, BETTER live-action Snow White movies!
Since the new live-action Snow White movie by Disney, which I absolutely REFUSE to watch, is just around the corner, I thought I'd share this with you.
If I want a live-action movie about Snow White, there's already plenty of choices, and now I'd like to list them:
Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997)
A very dark retelling of the Snow White story, with a lot of misery and death in it; instead of Dwarfs, there are seven ruffians, but they are still miners (and okay: one of them IS a little person, but still); and there's even Devil-worshipping in it, but it's still an interesting take on Snow White. And Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill are brilliant as the Evil Queen and Snow White (named Lily in this movie)'s father respectively.
Besides, I heard that the Grimm Fairytales were originally horror stories, so I guess this is as close as we can get to a movie adaptation of the original version of Snow White's tale. Maybe old Jacob and Wilhelm would love this film too. In fact, I think they'd prefer this one over the Disney movie...
Mirror Mirror (2012):
I know a lot of people thought this movie was stupid, but me? Personally, I thought it was alright. Julia Roberts was great as the Evil Queen. And the Dwarfs here reminded me of Time Bandits a little
Also, where was Peter Dinklage during the making of this movie? He throws a tantrum, when Disney wants to make a live-action Snow White, yet he was cool with this one using Dwarf actors? Or was it this movie that caused him to throw a hissy fit at the new one?
And now for my two personal favorites:
Sydney White (2007):
In this more modern reimagining of the story, Snow White is a college freshman named Sydney (played by Amanda Bynes), and she helps save the house of Seven Nerdy Students (this movie's version of the Dwarfs) from being demolished by a Sorority of Mean Girls (the leader of whom is film's version of the Evil Queen)
This one is like Snow White, Revenge of the Nerds and Mean Girls rolled into one, with a hint of Animal House.
(Hope Amanda Bynes is doing well...)
And last, but not least:
Snow White: The Fairest of Them All (2001):
Out of all the live-action Snow White movies, THIS is my favorite one! I love the over-all magical atmosphere, I like how the Dwarfs are depicted in this one, and I even love the cast: Miranda Richardson, Warwick Davis, Vincent Schiavelli, Clancy Brown, even Kristin Kreuk as Snow White.
In fact, I might as well watch THIS Snow White on the day the new one comes out. Or better yet: the classic animated Disney movie! Or maybe both...
How is it that I prefer a made-for-TV movie from over 20 years ago over a modern day high-budget Hollywood movie?
There! Those are my personal choices for a live-action Snow White movie, and also my recommendations.
And as for that new live-action Snow White? Yeah, I'm just gonna read the plot summary on Wikipedia and then forget about it forever...
