a hawthorn sapling near me was covered in Nematus lucidus larvae this spring, so i had a steady supply of bald children to look at whenever i wanted. like most sawfly larvae, they like hanging out in ridiculous poses, like this one with its ass in the air

I was today years old when I heard about the incredible Incense-Cedar Wood Wasp. Syntexis libocedrii is the only living species of Symphytan in the Anaxyelidae. It is considered a living fossil since the family has an extensive Mesozoic fossil record. It has the unique ability to oviposit in burnt incense-cedar. The wood is often still smoldering when the sawfly is laying its eggs. Nature is fascinating.
Last two were taken by my friend because my photos of the first one were too blurry to make out anything but a vague wasp shape and the other one was on my shirt
Sawfly (probably Tenthredinidae), ophionine wasp, a bunch of cynipoids (I have a feeling they might not be the gall producing ones but can't really say), another ichneumonid in between those, another ophionine (we saw quite a few of these but they kept flying off before I could get pictures T.T), an encyrtid and a megaspilid
We saw a bunch of other really cool bugs yesterday too, I might post some separately

I am so obsessed with this guy's little eyes??? That face is so silly looking. I am not sure who this man is beyond the Suborder Symphyta but he sure is cute.

Really uncommon for me to come across a sawfly! I hardly realized it was one at first- It almost looks like a fungus gnat but I knew it didn't look quite right for one of those! Wonderful to come across the predecessor suborder to the modern wasp!
