A bit early, but here's my Valentine's Day post for 2026! For my partner. ❤️ (He doesn't have a tumblr account so he won't see this, don't worry. Lol).
The wasp in the post is Synoeca septentrionalis.
I like to call Synoeca "vampire wasps" because of the conspicuous red mandibles and clypeus. While they don't actually drink blood, they pack a painful sting!
Warrior wasp (neotropical paper wasp) Synoeca septentrionalis
the distinct nest defense/attack behavior of the warrior wasps (genus Synoeca).when their distinct basket-shaped nest is approached by a potential attacker, the workers crawl out onto the outside of the nest and pound on it like a war drum, creating an audible sound. if the intruder continues to approach, they launch a simultaneous mass attack. their sting is considered one of the most painful in the insect world, though they can only sting once, as their stinger tears away in a manner similar to that of a honeybee.
warrior wasps are found in tropical Central and South America, and despite the danger they present, they are considered very beneficial because of their taste for crop pests. this video was taken in Columbia by Youtube user Jorge Ivan Orostegui Prada.
threat posturing and attack begins at :55. I don’t envy this guy!
