I was in Highland Park craving tacos, so I found myself at Taco Fiesta. To my surprise, while they had tacos, most of the menu items weren’t Mexican. The menu is similar to the many hamburger stands in Los Angeles: burgers, sandwiches (yes pastrami), hot dogs, corn dogs, tortas, tacos ($2 each, soft or hard shell), burritos ($2.85 and up), teriyaki, shakes, malts, sides and drinks. They had some interesting items like the taco burger, avocado fries and avocado sauce. Prices are very reasonable.
Taco Fiesta is a stand with some seating on the side in the covered patio area. Order at one window and pick up at the other. They also sell cigarettes and lottery tickets.
* Garden burger ($3.55): Really good! They know how to put together a tasty burger with fresh ingredients and lots of veggies. The garden burger featured a Thousand Island dressing, lettuce leaf, tomato, sliced red onion, pickles, toasted bun without sesame seeds and a warm veggie burger with mushrooms and rice. It was the type of patty that doesn’t try to taste like a beef patty. The freshness, the crunch of the veggies, the warmth of the burger and bun were very tasty and so cheap too. Best under $5 meal that I’ve had in awhile.

Taco Fiesta for Large Lunch Parties
Everybody loves my grilled Tilapia Soft Tacos for informal lunches and I will share this great recipe, which never fails and inherited from my mother. By marinating the tilapia fillets in a combination of spices lime juice and soy sauce gives these brilliant fish an outstanding bold flavor and I dress it with either queso fresco or avocado when I want to temper the acidity a little.
Ingredients:
· 16 soft corn tortillas
· Salt and pepper to taste
· 2 pounds tilapia fillets
· I minced garlic clove
· ½-teaspoon cumin
· 1-teaspoon chili powder
· 2 teaspoons soy sauce
· Two tablespoons lime juice
· ¼-cup olive oil
Instructions:
I start by combining garlic, cumin, chili powder, soy sauce, lime juice, and olive oil in a small bowl. Then I season the fish on all sides and lay the fillets flat in single layer before I drizzle the marinate over. Hen covering the fish with cling wrap and marinating for around an hour minimum. I also suggest you do this step the night before and take it out an hour before starting your meal.
Cooking the fish either on a preheated broiler with the rack six inches from heat source or gas grill is just as excellent when set to medium. Remove your fish from marinade and place it on the preheated grill from no longer, than three minutes a side and you will see it cooks beautifully flaky. Rest all the cooked fish for seven minutes before cutting them into chunky bites. You can add more salt, pepper and marinade if you wish after you have cut the chunks.
All you have left right before your guests arrive is cooking or warming the tortillas according to instructions on the packet and serve with your perfect fish and wait for the compliments that will follow.

Singed and rolled tight. Bunching up and down but that was ok.
Meat
Easily half of the bulk. Hot, flat strips of carne asada with little to no grease.
Ingredients
Fries, cheese, and pico de gallo. Fries were inconsistently crispy, but delicious when they were. The pico was there for flavor only, save for a large, unchopped onion strip I found. The cheese seemed to have pooled at the end and solidified. That was nice.
Salsa
Standard red bottle.
Other
Bright yellow barn with Mexican food inside. Drive-thru took about half the business, but there are enough patrons to fill the booths inside and some tables outside. The yellow/green decor is a odd departure from the usual red pinstripes at other places. Still not too far inland for Sailors to take a rather long lunch to cone here.

Fountain Crush, no ice.

Doughy but browned in a few places. Clean from oil but not too dry.

Very wide, flat carne asada. Not enough room for any pink in the meat at all, but still flavorful and not hard to chew.

Fries, cheese, and pico de gallo. The fries were yellow and thin and not as crispy as other places have them. The cheese was on the sides and cooled by the time it was served. And the pico was clearly fresh, but a little more onion than necessary.
Salsa
Just red to go. Nothing fancy.
Other
The Union Tribune listed this address as the location of Roberto Robledo's fist restaurant in his obituary. Ostensibly it's not a Roberto's anymore, but the style is the same as all the other 'berto's that followed suit around the city. Such legacy is understated here, except for the singular California Burrito sign prominently displayed over the counter. But there are enough stone and tile tables to sit and relax without the fuss that other Taco Shops give to their histories.
