miss mao, do you have any advice for new fanfic writers posting for the first time? you’ve been a serious inspiration in me continuing and as i near the finish line, i’m growing more and more anxious about publishing my ideas. i’m incredibly anxious that my plot makes no sense, the plot holes i might have missed, my writing might actually be ass, and what if no one actually likes my story?

- my most important advice is POST IT!!!! most writers have these fears (plot not good enough, writing not good enough, no one will like it, etc) regardless of how experienced or established they are. it's very normal for any creative to have self-doubts but you cannot let these insecurities get in the way of the joy of sharing. this applies with any art, but especially to fanfiction imo since people in fandom are actively seeking to read passion projects from other fans, not polished literary pieces with perfect plot and execution. and fandom overall is very kind and non-judgmental in my experience!!! share your works earnestly in good faith and I think you will find an audience that will read them in good faith!

- additionally, sometimes I find that it helps to close my eyes as I press post and log off before I can regret my decision 💀

mb that i've been gone but ive seen a lot of fics being tagged male reader when they're not?? like i get slapped in the face with 'mommy' or female pronouns. its really annoying,,

It would be so awesome if more people tagged their fics as sub reader. It's such an easy thing to do and helps people to look for/avoid it easier depending on their tastes.

Dom reader writers do this really well though.

Hey can we just agree on something guys? Stop tagging shit that isn't in the post or a major part of the post. I'm gonna call out a specific one that I've been seeing CONSTANTLY since joining the obx fandom:

Rafe gif-makers/ESPECIALLY FIC AND SMUT WRITERS, STOP TAGGING JJ IN EVERY ONE OF YOUR POSTS.

If he just shows up for half a second in your story, don't bother tagging him, okay? When I search the JJ tag over half the goddamn posts are literally just Rafe posts. They don't involve him at all. This new season they were only in like, one scene together so far?? So I know he's not gonna be in your Rafe post.

If you make a gifset that actually has both of them in it, especially interacting or paralleling etc, or you make a meta post about their relationship or parallels, or are shipping them together, THAT is when you should tag both. But certainly not in your Rafe x OC/Reader smut fic. Please.

I literally blocked the Rafe tag for this reason only. I thought that would filter it, but instead I scroll through the tag and all I see is "this post contains a tag you have filtered. This post contains a tag you have filtered. This post-" it tells you which tag anyway, but yall should know this is quite literally the only tag I have ever had to do this to. I have zero other filtered tags.

I have no beef whatsoever, he's just a fictional character and the actor seems great, but you have to stop clogging up every other tag- which exists solely so people can find the things they want to see- just to get engagement. This is not TikTok. That's not how it works here. If I want to look at Rafe, I will search Rafe. And so goes for everyone else. PLEASE TAG BASED ON CONTENT.

Oh also: if you're gonna make a post about how much you HATE a certain ship or something, DON'T TAG THAT SHIP, OBVIOUSLY??? You are being so obnoxious and clearly rage baiting when you do that. No one fucking cares. You just want to talk shit and then act like a victim when it pisses people off. Dude, post that shit without tags for the people that follow you or whatever ship you're actually gunning for so that it finds its audience and not all the people that enjoy it. Ship and let ship, you don't have to like but stop throwing it in the faces of people that do.
