Commission wip. I’ve sewn up the fur sheath for the tail but I’ve left the bottom seam open so I can more easily sew a pocket along the top seam which will hold the internal movement armature.

Commission wip. Lots of work on the tails final touches including setting the gore cap, final hand trim in a ‘shaggy’ style, sculpting the foam spikes, sewing the gold coverings, & sewing the spade/spikes down. This project has sure been a fun, frustrating, & invigorating learning experience that has come together so so well.
Commission WIP. These are all the fur pieces for the tail with 3 levels of pre-shaving (none, mid shave, short shave) which will give a natural gradient of fur length down the entire tail whilst still retaining the characters shaggy/fluffy appearance.
Gosh darnnit! Should have realised when I pivoted that the original fur sheath wouldn’t work with a foam core, so had to re-pattern.
For those wondering, the original would flex fine because stuffing itself shifts/deforms fluidly with the form allowing the overall shape to remain the same. However, since foam is more rigid it needs extra room in the fabric along movement points due to the structural tolerances of the foam - this is the same reason why relief cuts were needed to allow the foam to bend up/down/sideways without deforming the overall shape.
The original sheath won’t be wasted, I will modify and finish it as a stuffed semi-floor dragger tail/paw set for sale.
A lovely person decided to give me a chance to try out an idea for a semi-poseable, gravity defying tail for their OC. To pull this off I need the tail to be super solid and stable, but also light and plush. To achieve this without a foam insert I’m patterning from a miniature form & will scale up the pattern to fit the commissioners measurements. The model tail tip is also straightened to pattern as this is the section that will have internal rigging to allow movement.
I decided to make something silly. I’m in for a stack of hand sewing on this project!
