Everyone knows that fast, flashy pieces are hard. But what about all the other kinds of difficulty?

In isolation, each individual part is simplicity itself: each player plays nothing other than even eighth notes grouped into straightforward pairs of ascending half steps, and there are no changes of meter or tempo. But outside of a few brief measures where all the players suddenly and unexpectedly line up, the four performers are constantly offset by tiny, unpredictable increments, making it nearly impossible to keep your place in the piece without getting lost. Even when staring directly at a score so you can see every single note that the other three people are playing in real time, it’s trivially easy to get turned around, and fiendishly difficult to notice until you fail to land one of those surprise unisons. The separate parts aren’t demanding; what’s difficult is lining them up.
