tei’s is one of the designs where i ask what went and where did it go wrong because i really wanna know why this man is wearing overalls with double breasted buttons. so i gave him an outfit based on Japanese convenience store uniforms and tied his hair up. i also gave him a “hello my name is” namecard in japanese which may not be right because we all know how google translate is
his backstory wouldn’t be so bad if he wasn’t 17. i feel like i can’t emphasize enough that these characters can definitely have the trauma they already have but i don’t believe von had the purest intentions. also, from what i've heard the psychosis representation was good at the start but started going into stereotype territory from the end, and i'm really wondering why he started a cult in chapters 4-5??? for his backstory i tried to focus more on his relationship with his mother and the development of his psychosis, specifically the paranoia caused by it
for his story role he's the chapter 5 victim after being killed by erina. his character arc would be more focused on his psychosis and paranoia getting worse over the course of the game. as i said before his only friends would be ikeda and shishikura, since they all trauma bond over having terrible parents, and while they're all somewhat close, ikeda and tei are closer since shishikura is less isolated than the other two. when ikeda dies in chapter 3 his mental state takes a hit: on one hand tei believed ikeda was the only person who understood him, on the other hand he feels abandoned by shishikura who is spending more time with the rest of the cast. even more isolated than before, tei starts spiraling and begins to have the false belief that the others are against him, and the partially true belief that the are being watched. by chapter 5 he formulates a plan to murder everybody, beginning with shishikura, out of both resentment and that he’s the easiest target, but he is incapacitated and killed by erina before he gets the chance.
here’s his backstory:
Atsushi Tei is the youngest of two children. His father was missing from the picture after he was born, and he had a strained relationship with his narcissistic mother, so his older sister Remi was the only relative he could rely on. When Remi came of age, she suddenly disappeared. Their mother said she ran away from home, and Atsushi never really believed her. If Remi ran away, she would’ve brought him with her. Atsushi later learned that his Mother kicked Remi out of the house, and before he graduated high school he ran away with a bag of his belongings and the clothes on his back. He managed to graduate while living in a homeless shelter and taking on more jobs, but has struggled to support himself. He’s put off his objective of going to college for now, spending countless hours trying to locate and reconnect with his sister. For a long time, Atsushi had undiagnosed psychosis, which had developed due to the excessive control his mother tried to exert on him and his sister; one method she used was putting hidden cameras around the house. As a result, Atsushi often felt extremely paranoid, believing that his mother was watching him even when he was out of the house. His psychosis worsened after he ran away—Atsushi was convinced she was searching for him, and later believed the police were on her side as well. None of his coworkers are aware of his psychosis, as Atsushi hides his paranoia and delusions well due to his customer service skills. In the meantime, Atsushi has been looking to change his name and find a place to go into hiding.
