The 1970s, when the height of health innovation was simply moving the burning plant matter a quarter-inch further away from your face. This ad brilliantly bridges the gap between the pretentious directors of the Golden Age—who apparently needed a stick to find their "sense of direction"—and the modern, plaid-clad career woman who just wants that "clean" flavor while surrounded by hot studio lights. It is fascinating that Parliament’s "special effect" was essentially just a tiny cardboard air gap. In an era before CGI, I suppose a recessed filter was the closest we got to movie magic.
