“Monsters aren’t real,” Terry sighed, shining a flashlight into Traci’s closet for the fifty-second damn time that night. “You know that, Peanut. Nothing in here can hurt you.”
“I heard it again!” Traci insisted, throwing her tiny seven year old hands up. “And I saw it run away when you turned on the lights! I know it’s here!”
“Traci, you’re a big girl. You don’t need to believe in silly superstitions like monsters hiding in your closet or under your bed. What do I say about monsters?” Terry crossed his arms.
Traci scowled, hugging her knees together as she reluctantly answered, “Real monsters are actually just upper class people trying to take advantage of those they climbed over to get to their spot at the top.” She glared at him with all the intensity a child could possibly muster. “But I saw it! It ran under my bed! Look under there!”
“Fine. I’ll look under there one more time.” Terry groaned as he laid down on the floor to shine the flashlight down into the small gap beneath her little bed. “But there’s still no such thing as-”
The flashlight beam caught a pair of gleaming red eyes.
Terry Thirteen secretly adores the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Ruddigore. He loves how the character of Ruthven/Robin stands up directly against the supernatural and defeats his family's curse.
