Request: can you do an imagine or headcanons for jim gordon fostering a street kid who helps him with cases? thanks!

A/N: got a lil carried away, but I hope you guys enjoy it.

Your life on the streets had never been pretty, nor had your relationship with the GCPD. You were always evading them for one petty crime or another. It wasn’t your fault that your family kicked you out. Not that they had much choice of course; the narrows often asked too much of those with too little. One particular officer had always been close to catching you, and was coincidentally first to the scene. Jim Gordon was a good detective, so you’d heard. Well, what you’d heard was that crooks on the street didn’t like him, but those were synonymous.

You had your first interaction after stealing some money from a pop-up stall, not far from the GCPD. Jim had tried to catch you, but you were too fast, climbing up fire escapes and running through buildings, eventually getting lost in a crowd. From then on you two had many run-ins. The day you finally got caught was of no mistake on your part. It was a man with some sense of righteousness that stopped you from getting up the stairs to your escape, which, naturally, lead to your apprehension and the to Jim. You could see the pity in his eyes as he looked you up and down. The chair you sat in next to his desk was uncomfortable, and the cuffs were tight. He was silent for a minute while he scribbled something down. A cop’s life was always eventful, huh? When he was done he took no liberties in getting down to business.

“Why’d you steal it?” he asked, his voice stern yet almost father-like. You scoffed at his ridiculous question. What other reason would a kid from the narrows have to steal anything?

“I needed it to live.” You replied. Simply and plainly. After all, that’s all there was too it, and avoiding questions would just mean more suspicion raised. His eyes turned from pity to sadness, though a quick pressing of his lips tried to hide it. He looked at you, back at his paperwork, and then got up. He walked around a corner and out of view. You could hear soft murmuring as he rounded the corner again, followed by a raven-haired woman, her attire suggesting her to be the M.E. It took you by surprise; you weren’t injured, why bring a medical professional? They stood just out of earshot, and you couldn’t read lips all too well. Their conversation was lost to you, but it’s end gave you an answer for the woman’s involvement with you. Before they separated, they leaned in for a quick kiss. So they wanted something to do with you. Weird.

Jim returned and sat down next to you. His eyes were sympathetic, and slightly joyful, if you were as good at reading people as you thought.  “Hey, uh, Y/N. Here at the GCPD, we don’t want kids like you to stay on the streets, especially with the recent rise in crime and-who am I kidding, you don’t want to hear this. Look, how’d you like to come live with me? It’d be food and shelter as well as an education. What do you say?” How could you respond to that? It was any kids dream to be offered a warm place to stay, at least where you were from, but to be confronted with it so outright? It was odd, to say the least. But you did want to be rid of your cuffs, and have a real bed to sleep in, so you gave a tentative nod.

“Great.” Jim said, clasping his hands. “Now, let’s get you out of those handcuffs and into some new clothes. Then I’ll take you home.” He unlocked your cuffs and you rubbed your wrists. He stood up and you did the same, and together you walked around the GCPD to Jim’s locker. He got his belongings out, then told you to wait there while he talked to his captain, and a few minutes later you were off to your new life.

Time Skip

You’d been living with Jim and Lee for about a year, and it had become hard to think of your past life. You’d often hell Jim with his cases, your narrows smarts helping him more than he’d care to admit. School was a different matter, though. The other kids hadn’t liked you at first, after all you were form the shittiest part of town, where crime was highest. But they’d warmed up to you after around a month or so, and you had a small group of friends you trusted. Life was better for you. You’d kept in touch with one or two kids from the narrows, and Jim made sure to help them as best as he could. You’d had your highs and lows, but it didn’t matter. You loved him.

So Lee thinks her darkest self is loving Jim Gordon? 🙄

How about your attachment to Gotham, Lee? Your inability to walk away from a place you profess to hate? Or a man who you insist is soooo very dark?

She spends so much time insisting that Jim just wreaks havoc and moves on without caring or feeling the consequences. She believes this so thoroughly that she actually takes the Tetch virus intentionally so that she can feel nothing the way she’s so sure Jim feels nothing.

But Jim feels everything. He spends every single day of his life mired in regret. He doesn’t let himself off the hook for a single second, ever. And Lee would know that if she ever knew Jim Gordon instead of just projecting her own insecurities onto him.

Like fuck...even when he’s got the Tetch virus, he’s primarily focused on getting to Lee to save her. And when his “darkest self” whispers to him, it’s not telling him to attack others like Barnes or Mario. It’s telling him all the awful things Lee tells him. It’s telling him she’s right about him. It’s telling him to give in and go with her.

But she isn’t right, and I think it’s a testament to how wrong she is that Jim’s better nature wins out in the end.
