I do believe no one in Underfell started out a bad person, especially alphys
with the pressure of being the royal scientist after gaster's disappearance, I imagine that she slowly became more and more deranged, and with that, came the guilt of her experiments
though her amalgamates weren't entirely an accident.
curiosity is a curse, and with her horrible doings in mind, alphys started blaming not herself, but "Dice". Dice, she claimed, was the "bad version" of herself, the one doing all these things, becoming a tyrant like the king himself
but she knew that wasn't the truth.
there is no Jekyll without a Hyde. The Hyde has to come from somewhere, Jekyll just has to embrace him. Alphys had to embrace Dice.
and when she did, all she truly did was embrace her true, inner self. Consumed by hatred, despair, fear, anger. Lacking any sort of hopes and dreams.
A thought that occurred when thinking about the AUs where all the humans fell together: There wouldn't be any amalgamates. Alphys got the determination from the human SOULs, and if everyone fell together, there weren't any human SOULs to extract determination from, so no determination to inject into fallen monsters, so no amalgamates.
Fun fact: My sister finds Endogeny to be the creepiest of the Amalgamates, citing the unsettling music (which is called "Woofenstein", btw) that continuously gets faster throughout the fight as one of the main reasons why it freaks her out so much.
Theory: Undyne could have known about the experiments
[ SPOILER ALERT!!! This contains heavy spoilers about parts of the plot of Undertale! ]
Okay, here’s something I’ve wanted to get off my chest for a long while now. It’s a theory, if you so will, about Undyne and what she could have known of Alphys’ experiments prior to them getting revealed in the Pacifist Run.
Basically, when I replayed Undertale for the second time about a year ago, suddenly one little, simple sentence that Undyne said in the Alphys Date sequence felt kinda … out of place. I had seen the date scene a couple of times before, but weirdly enough until then that sentence had never made me stumble. Now it does every time I watch it and yet somehow? I’ve never seen anyone talking about it? (then again, I never specifically looked for theories about this, so maybe there are more people who noticed that. If so, tell me!) Maybe I’m simply reading too much into this, but just see for yourself and let it sink in.
Alphys reveals to Undyne that she has been lying to her about basically everything. All she admits to in this scene are the lies she specifically told to Undyne. It’s just about the two of them right now. (you can read the entire scene here)
It’s all silly and goofy and when Undyne is done expressing how she doesn’t really care about the lies (but probably does a little, come on, she threw her in a trash can) she says this:
But then she adds:
“I don’t want you to have to lie to anyone anymore.”
Now, why would Undyne say that? And phrase it in such a specific way? Isn’t that kinda odd? Alphys never mentioned that she lied to anybody else, at least not in this scene and not to Undyne. Yet Undyne saying this implies she’s well aware Alphys has been lying to more people than just her. And had to do it, too and still is.
Now just think about it. This is foreshadowing the True Lab part where we learn about how Alphys accidentally created the Amalgamates and kept them hidden out of fear and shame. These other people Alphys lied to are Asgore and the relatives of the Amalgamates. Some of these relatives include:
Doggo, Dogamy and Dogaressa, Lesser Dog and Greater Dog whose relatives make up Endogeny and Shyren who’s sister is part of Lemon Bread.
The dogs are all part of the Royal Guard and Undyne is their Captain. Shyren is Undyne’s neighbour and she also used to give her piano lessons until aforementioned sister fell down. Undyne knows them all, cares about them and probably deals with them quite often, too.
And we know the dog family desperately tried to get into contact with Alphys, but she didn’t respond to their letters.
And now we have Undyne and Alphys befriending each other and hanging out frequently. Them being friends also seems to be a really open thing.
So, how far-fetched would it be to assume that someone from the Amalgamate’s families approached Undyne at some point and asked her if she knows something about what happened to their fallen relatives? And in the process explained to her that they agreed to letting Alphys experiment on them?
Asgore also knows about the experiments. Not that they went wrong and how, but Alphys doing these experiments in the first place must have been by his order. And again, Undyne is close to him, too and could have asked him for more details on that matter.
In conclusion: Undyne could have known about Alphys having done experiments on fallen monsters (just to the extend Asgore and the relatives did, not more though, maybe less. She definitely didn't know about the Amalgamates).
So, that’s that. A little thing that’s been on my mind for months now.
I’d just love to hear what other people think about this, because usually, when it comes to the topic of Alphys and the Amalgamates Undyne is seen as someone who was completely clueless. (Curiously enough, we never learned about any reactions except for Asgore’s and Toriel’s regarding that matter in the game) And I’m just here constantly overthinking … maybe she wasn’t.
Maybe she was well aware something was up, but kept silent about it, just making sure that Alphys was fine and got more comfortable with herself. I mean, she obviously knew Alphys had a problem. The way she tells you about her first encounter with Alphys, her stressing Alphys being fine when you call Undyne and Papyrus in the Lab - and Undyne must have planned to have Papyrus train her to get more happy with herself even before Alphys admitted to her lies.
She definitely hasn’t been oblivious to Alphys’ struggles.
