Today at Pemberley, the 26th of January:
At her husband’s suggestion, Mrs. Elizabeth Darcy drew her sister, Miss Mary Bennet aside in the hopes of speaking candidly. After days of Miss Bennet’s subterfuge and peculiar behavior, Mrs. Darcy’s concerns were great.
However, she attempted to create a light tone for the conversation by bringing Miss Bennet to Mrs. Darcy’s favorite reading room. Bright with sunlight and furnished comfortably, the room housed particularly dear books with worn covers and well-loved pages.
Miss Bennet glanced around. “Is this where you pass your time? With this whole grand house under your dominion?”
“I am often in the garden, or following Mr. Darcy about, or listening to Georgiana play one of the pianofortes.” Mrs. Darcy considered Miss Bennet before adding, “Much like at Longbourn, my favorite part of the house is the family which inhabits it.”
“We are told that lying is a sin.”
“I have surely sinned in my life but my words were not a lie.”
Miss Bennet moved sharply to sit in a soft chair. “You could not wait to be rid of us. I believe you only ever wanted marriage so that you might be free of all in our family but father and Jane.”
“I would never have married my husband if not for love.” Mrs. Darcy was resolute in her declaration.
Miss Bennet considered this, then said, “Had Lydia and Mr. Wickham loved each other, the disgrace of their actions would not be lessened by the sentiment.”
“No,” Mrs. Darcy agreed, “However, I would not think them both the stupidest fools I have ever met. Reason may give way to love and be forgiven the trespass.”
